I've had these heads for over 30 years.
They were in good running condition when removed, but,
they should be considered cores for rebuilding due to 30 years of idle time.

Kurt (wmachine) has kindly alerted me that I've mistakenly said "B" heads are 1965
when they are actually 1966.
I couldn't edit the title box to make the correction.

So there are no misunderstandings or disappointments,
Henry, 66400, has informed me the numbers on these heads indicate that,
although these are "B" heads, they are not originally from a 4-4-2.
I honestly thought the "B" heads came only on 4-4-2's.

 

Ed, I know that you know that B-heads are not '65, but '66. (But I do know of a pair of B heads that came on a '65 442).

You're right, "B"s are '66. I knew that. Brain fart.
In fact I was going to mention the urban legend that early '67 4-4-2's had "B" heads.
Don't really know if that's actually true, though. Never saw any first hand.

I don't know of '67s with B heads, but as I said I do know of '65s with B heads. Case in point was a guy at the Nats in St Louis in 1991 that had a mid/late July built '65 442 with B heads who was unjustly taking a lot of heat about the heads/engine not being original. Fortunately for him, the engine unit number was V02xxxxx, confirming it was indeed a late build '65.

It's a stamped letter/number combo on the end surface on the front passenger side. Only one head will be stamped.Henry

I should've known what you meant. I always heard that refered to as the engine I.D. number.

67 Toronado motors had B heads from what i know as well.

One of the heads appears to have a bent valve.
Henry, there's a pic of the engine number you asked for as well as the all other numbers that were visible.

If the B heads are off a 442 does that mean they are 45 degree?

 

The bank angle, 39 degree vs. 45 degree, is in the block.
Don't think the heads are different, but, not positive.
Also, don't think 4-4-2 vs. non-4-4-2 matters in the same year.
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will comment.

 

I have seen -one- violation of the B=1966 and C=1967 rule of thumb which I believed to be a factory issue. It was on a 98 [probably], many years ago, appeared to be untouched. I can't recall if it was B heads on a '67 or C heads on a '66. Pre-Digital-Camera days. I wrote down the engine number in the toolbox of my truck.... 5 vehicles ago.

Heard rumors of such, but, never actually saw it first hand.

 

My 67 had one C head, the correct 442 head on the passenger side with the correct stamping, and one B head on the drivers side. Both plumbed for AIR. I assumed the B head had been put on as a replacement at some time in its life. Both had big valves. Still have the B head. I replaced it with another C head.
