NOS front fender primer and paint questions

I put an original NOS GM passenger fender on to replace the one my brother put a dent in decades ago. The new fender has some type of black primer on it from GM and I was wondering if I would be able to just scuff it up and primer over it before painting?? Or do I have to take it to bare metal? I hope not because it has no surface rust anywhere so I hate to bare the metal.

Also will it hurt anything to put DP0 epoxy primer over the Kondar that is on a couple panels or do I have to sand that all back down to bare metal?

Thanks for any info,

The black primer is e-coat and you can leave it. Scuff and shoot.

Would recommend a sealer over the e-coat before paint.

Epoxy primer can be shot over most any substrate as long as you are comfortable with the prep underneath the existing surface. Naturally you will want to scuff the surface first before you lay down the epoxy.

On your question about OEM primer. Take a rag with lacquer thinner and soak a spot on new fender and if it softens then remove the primer to bare metal and epoxy primer. Is this a restoration type of job? You can spray epoxy primer over 2K primer with the right prep. Like to know more info tho............

Spend a 1/2 hour with a 80 grit on a da and get rid of whatever is on the fender. At least do the topside. DP40 is a good product that your putting over over a product you don't know what it is. Do it once and know it's the best you can do.
