What type of paint

My 65 Cutlass was repainted sometime prier to my acquiring it. I know it is a single stage paint, but not whether it is enamel or urethane. Is there anyway to tell? Does it matter? I want to repaint the hood.

I'm not aware of a way to tell but it doesn't matter. Any new urethanes or enamels play nice together. The lacquer is the one that isn't so nice.

Take a clean white cloth, wet it with lacquer thinner and rub a spot of paint to test the reaction. If the color comes off immediately or the spot starts wrinkling, it shows that the type of paint is enamel. But if the color wipes off onto the white cloth only after rubbing, it is a sign of lacquer paint

repaint the entire car (if you can afford it) ... paint technology has come too far for a “ nice “ car to be covered in Single stage paint
