Well got my car hauled back, I plan on taking it down to the frame/chassis and want to paint or do some kind of coating on it. I know powder coating is the way to go, but I just need something that will prevent more rust through the next 4 years of college. Same thing for the motor which will hopefully be a 455

Try POR 15. They have the engine paint as well as the rust encapsuluator for the frame. Eastwood also has both,but I used the POR15 on my car.

 

If you don't want POR15 for your engine, try Fusick www.fusick.com for your correct color engine paint. Should take 3-4 cans to paint your engine.

As for the frame, I'm using Eastwood extreme chassis black. Comes in spray cans if you don't have a paint gun. First I got rid of all scale rust. Then used their rust converter. After that, put on a coat of rust encalsulator, which is ridiculously thick and works as a priming agent. From there, paint. I can't see you having many rust issues after that.

Well looks like por15 is gonna go on the engine, just need a 455 to put it on... 68 tom, do you know how that stuff holds up against alot of salt?

 

I know I am not Tom, but from what I have heard over the years, POR15 is resistant to pretty much anything after it has cured after being properly applied. It is an epoxy coating pretty much... Take a look at their website to learn more - por15.com. They have the chassis cote black for the frame and their regular semi-gloss was a tough perfect match for the 72 radiator support...

 

I used POR-15 on the entire frame and under all the floors in my 65 98 conv. One trick you need to know, If youplan to paint anything over the POR 15 you need to do it while its a hair tacky. If you wait it is very hard to get anything to bond or stick to it.

Using a spray gun, what size tip and what was used to reduce it for flow through the gun and what was the ratio?

 

I used POR15 Solvent to thin @2:1 ratio. I also used a 1.8 tip,mix whatever amount you plan on using,because if you let the paint mixed sit overnite it will be hard.I found spraying the POR-15 looks a lot better and using a brush,just my opinion

I used it on my frame and floors with excellent results. Have not driven it on salty roads so I cannot say how well it holds up under those conditions.
