Hate it or Love it 71 Supreme

So to start off I wanted to go with a color that was both old school and new school... Not to flashy yet classy. The original color was beige, when i bought it it was a grey but some one half-***'d it so away I went. I will make a build thread later on ....

Color change looks good. The rust you fixed is quite common on vinyl cars of this era. Did you do BC/CC?

What's to hate about a project 71 Cutlass Supreme? Last pic - what's happening with the back end?

I assume your asking why the back end is so high in the last picture? the guy i bought it from only put 3 shocks on it... when i jacked it up to move it in the garage the spring shifted... but tonight im throwing shocks and springs on it so im not to worried

I sure like the color choice - uncommon these days. Reminds me of my '86...

Thanks guys wasn't sure if I was going to get reamed from the purists but beige wasn't going to do it. Now if anyone could send me in a direction of lowering springs on a budget so it doesn't look like a jeep would be awesome lol.

I've been looking up springs on eBay . There's cheap to high end springs I've seen on eBay.

If you want stock, get Moog springs correct for your car. Rockauto has them. If not listed for a 71, check 72 - they are all listed there. These will bring the ride height back to stock.
Sounds like you have the wrong springs in there or they did not have the weight ont he wheels when they tightened the control arms.

What did you do to it in the last pic where it's sitting really high? All the rest of the pic's shows it much lower.

I think it's the tire it's self but I don't get it. The white wall tire is 195/70/14 and the rest are 205/75/14. It'll be corrected soon I'm just saving up for the springs to bring it back down. I just put the new shocks all the way around on last night but there's no difference so I'm going to skip throwing pictures up.

Don't let that bother you. A lot of us 'purists' appreciate a nice looking car even if the color doesn't match the cowl tag. Carry on - it's looking great!

Agreed, but be careful about HD springs. They are shorter (IIRC they're for 442 performance) but considerably stiffer. If your car hasn't had rear end work, I doubt the bushing torque has anything to do with your ride height.

Eric, it's up on a jack.

That's the tires 'aspect ratio'. The 195/70/14 is a narrower and smaller height sidewall and results in an overall wheel height of 24.75 inches. The 205/75/14's will be wider and taller and results in a wheel height of 26.1 inches - almost 1.5 inches difference. That kind of mismatch should be avoided especially side to side on the rear axle. Once you have all the same profiles (as you said) the problem should go away unless you have mismatched springs at the rear. When installing the rear springs - the pigtail at the top should point to the right on both sides of the car. Remember to put in new rubber isolators up there too.

Like the color & glad that you didn't put stripes back on it. Hood stripes look OK but side stripes don't look right on that body style.

225/70/14's would look MUCH better and handle even more impressively! And that's closer to the stock G70 14 that could be ordered with the 442. Are you looking at raised white letter tires?

Now that I think of it I have a set of bfg's with raised white letters but there a little dry rotted. I'm in no rush to choose a wheel set up I still have more to finish

Surprised to see you left the hole for fender antenna. 71 Cutlass antennas are integrated into the windshield.

Looking good! I gotta say, I like the color. It wouldn't look bad lowered like you said, but with 15" steelies painted black or body color and pie pans!

IIRC 1969 was the last year the Cutlass had a fixed mast antenna on the fender. The hole is there because the previous owner put it there. Maybe he wanted a power antenna or felt a fixed mast one would give better reception. Bottom line is it's there now and would cost more to fix than it's worth since you've already painted the car. Look for an antenna cable/grommet on the firewall to see where the after market one was routed through the firewall.

EDIT: BTW, I just noticed that the hood on your car is from a 1972 model. Easy to spot because only the 72 cars with AC didn't have the vent piercings at the back by the cowl trim.
