About to paint a fender and hood on 71 Cutlass ****First Timer****
All,
The original paint job was ok but I ran over a can of black spray paint and it got on the passenger side door, front fender, and hood. Which is why I am painting now. My door is going to need some bodywork so I am not jumping on that yet. Normally I like to tackle the difficult tasks first, but in this case I think it'll be a better idea to do the easy part first, that way I can apply anything I learn to the next panel.
I haven't painted anything since I fixed the door on my Chevy Citation (X-11...the High Output 60 degree V6 lol. Mounted sideways no less) I'm spraying Dupont Chromasystem using a $59.99 Ingersoll Rand normal style (Not HVLP) gun. It has a 1.8 tip.
The P sheets say the tip is ok for the primer (2k), but they recommend a 1.5 tip for the base. I don't see where I can order any tips for this gun yet. If time keeps running out and I don't paint it until next weekend then I may find some but if I get to it today I am going to spray it with this 1.8 tip and let her ride. Guess I can crank the air pressure up a bit to compensate but since I have a 2HP compressor from Harbor Freight there is only so much more I can crank it up. I just read the P sheets again. They say to sand the surface with P240 then spray the 2k primer. Then sand the primer with P400.
I am about to run around and try to find some 6" 240, and 400 DA sandpaper locally. If I do and it doesn't feel too sticky out, I'll go ahead and spray her later this afternoon.
Here's some pics

I still need to hit her with the 240DA
If anyone has any hints/suggestions lemme know.

if your spraying paint with a 1.8 go fast use a higher pressure. the 1.8 is gonna pile paint on and you will prob have orange peel. sounds like your using 2k single stage if you needed to you could buff it. i spray color with a 1.4 and that works good.

Hello,
I'm spraying 2k Primer FIller then Chromabase for the BC. Clear Coat is Chroma something. It's not single stage and I'm not sure what it is (Laquer vs Enamel) I went to the local Mattos and thats what they sold me. Here's the P Sheets

http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/...romaBaseBC.pdf
I also went out and bought me a cheap Gravity feed gun from Harbor Freight to spray my base. http://www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-h...gun-47016.html
I bought an ingersoll rand from Advance Auto parts to spray the primer. Here it is http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web..._T|GRP2003____
It has a 1.8 tip and the HVLP gun has a 1.5 tip. Perfect for what I'm spraying. I need somewhere local to find sandpaper though. Nobody has DA 220 grit! Arrrgghhhhh
If you have any other tips lemme know. Thanks!

Are you using any sealer or not. If not then I would wet sand the primer with 600 before you paint. You dont have to have 220 you could use 320 thats what alot of shops use. You get away with using as corse as 180 for the primer or 80 if you wanted but it could shrink back over that big of scratches.
