68 442 underside of the hood paint?

What was the correct paint finish on the underside of a 68 442 hood? Body color, Black...? Will be swapping engines in the spring and want to refinsih the hood while its off. Thanks...

My '68 (Lansing car) was black, a satin to semi-flat kind of finish. The same for my '69 (Fremont car).

Black, but if you want it assembly line correct the front portion would have body color overspray

Not painting under the hood is one of the many shortcuts gm did to save money. Most of us doing a quality paint job will paint that as well like it should’ve been, however if originality is what you’re after, put some chassis black or matte black on it and let it get overspray along the edges like gm did.

GM’s failure to paint under the hood is also why there’s often surface rust under there.
