442 Fender Emblems: Does this look right??
I'm trying to place the 442 numbers in the correct spot for '70-'72 front fenders. I have a template for drilling the holes but it's for a '69 model year and the numbers look too high to me. So I've scoured the interwebs and scaled some measurements from on-line pics. My best approximation has the numbers 14-1/2" down (measured from the upper body line on the fender) and 3-1/4" from the rear edge of the fender. Does this look correct? Could someone measure their car and confirm my approximated measurements?
Thanks!

Those emblems you show in the picture seem a bit spaced out between the 2 "4"s than the 70-72's I'm used to.
I put NOS fenders on my 71 442 back in 1990, and didn't have the luxury of ordering up those handy templates they got now. I did a cardboard template of the original GM fenders and placed my emblems accordingly.
I'll try to get out to the shop tomorrow and get some measurements and hopefully be able to help you out. Maybe.

442 Fender Emblem Spacing
Thank you to 69HO43 for sharing dimensions he pulled off his existing fenders! I came up with two spacing configurations; the only difference being the spacing between the "4" and the "2". The first layout the 4-2 spacing is 1-1/8" between the "4" and "2" mounting posts. The "4" & "2" look a bit too fart spaced apart. The second layout reduced the 4-2 spacing to 1-1/16" (measured between the mounting posts). In my opinion the closer spacing is the better of the two options. Here's some pics.

First Layout: 1-1/8" between the "4" & "2" Mounting Studs.
Second Layout: 1-1/16" between the "4" & "2" Mounting Studs.

Templates? I haven't seen them anywhere, is there a source? I got measurements for my 69 and made a template, mounted the #s on it and was happy. Then transferred it all to the fender and drilled. All I can say is if anything is a hair off you wind up with a crooked number. i would up cutting the post off one and adhering it. A template designed for it would be great.

1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass/442/F85 FENDER & TRUNK EMBLEM TEMPLATE KIT | Oldsmobile Cutlass/442/F85 Parts | EM4740T (thepartsplaceinc.com)
That's only for the 70-72 styles. 69's still don't have any commercially available templates that I am aware of, anyway.

Are they any different as far as the holes or size go? I looked in the OPGI catalog and they look very similar. are the holes sized for a screw on nut in the back or a push in type?
thanks for the link,

OEM 442 emblems of that era were speed nutted on the fenders and front tooth (and grille for 71/72) with individual numbers. The trunk had the barrel nuts.
The front tooth on 69 and 70 is fairly easy as it has bosses already placed. Just drill the proper boss holes from the back and you're there.
The spacing between the numbers on the trunk, as mentioned in other posts, differs on the 69 vs. the 70-72. The 69's were spread out just a tad more on spacing. I think someone has the dimensions for that somewhere here.
The spacing between the numbers on the fenders seems to be the same best I can tell. The location of the emblems may be slightly different on the fender than the 70-72, however. The 69-73 fender emblem part numbers listed are the same, so I'm guessing you could use a 70 fender template in the proper position on the 69 and get by if you had to.
