1955 Olds, Polar White - 60 and Panama Blue 41

Ok, fenders are ready for color. Hood will be next. Painting/restoring in stages. I thought I had paint purchased from years ago, but I don't. Basic 1955 Olds Holiday 88. Non-metallic colors.

I have the Olds paint codes,
1. Panama Blue - S41 PPG ref 11320, Dupont ref # 1992
2. Polar White - 60 PPG ref 31070, Dupont ref # 1595

Unfortunately, I live in CA. I'm willing to drive a fur piece to get the right colors. My local paint guy has no idea what these correspond to in today's paint formula's.

I do have an old can of Panama Blue, determined by a light gun, in PPG Acrylic Enamel, DAR 16718. but again, he can't translate into a can of actual paint.

Questions,
1. What type/brand of paint would you guys recommend? Might be a problem getting it in CA
2. Anyone have paint formula's for these paints? The Polar White PPG code keeps coming up a Bluish/Violet metallic.

I want to avoid a 2 stage-clear mainly because it won't look right. I've done some dinking around on the internet searching, but the same pages keep coming up with the same codes, and no formula's.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, what is that and how do I find it? Got it--I presumed the paint store would be able to handle this. I really don't want to have to learn about paint formula's, but if I have to...

The guy called back to PPG, but I think they have the Polar White wrong, and couldn't find anything for Panama Blue.

Not sure they can ship stuff to CA.

What kind of paint would you recommend?

Any experience using their paints?

Autocolorlibrary.com enter your year and a paint chart will be there, pull the paint codes from the chart and insert where indicated. Should give you a choice to pick from along with quantities.

I can't imagine any good paint store that couldn't match those colors. Will they match by eye in your store? If so take a piece of your car in and have them match that surface , gas door, ashtray ect. This has worked for me and I live in California, coatings haven't been that much of a problem for me...Tedd

Take a copy of the sheet to your painter after entering your info, he should be able to get what you need. If he uses a spectrometer to match your paint, it will tell him what to mix to get the color right.

That's one of the problems, they don't have a spectrometer that works. Time for a new paint store.

Yep. time for a new paint store.

One of the paint stores I do business with had no problem mixing my paint from the numbers out of my 55 Old's shop manual but maybe they had old product crossover information. I would check around there shouldn't be that much of a problem to get product ether by number cross over, use of a photo spectrometer or a eye match.... Tedd

I called TCP Global today and had a nice chat with a sales rep named Sonny.

I relayed my concerns about using stuff I've never heard of before, and of course, he did his sales job, and danced a little.

Ended up ordering both colors from them in Acrylic Urethane, single stage. The Panama Blue is slightly metallic, so it might get interesting. I should have it by end of next week. Fenders are all ready, so it shouldn't take much time to tell if the paint is any good.

Significant progress. Fenders still ready for color. Hood removed, stripped, cleaned and primered along with many engine bay components and sheet metal.

Next, have to deal with some rust on the lower aft fender mounts. Once the firewall is cleaned up and the window grill area painted, I'll paint the hood and fenders. I'll wait till the majority of the other work is done to minimize exposure to moving them around and damage/scratches.

Some areas better than I expected, and some worse. I spent better part of an hour cleaning 60 years of dirt out of the fender wells. The worse, was rust through in the aft wells, right by the lower aft door jambs, by a panel weld/joint. Not sure how I'm going to deal with that yet. Hood front lip was much better than I expected, just some light surface rust.
