What transmission came stock to 78 Omega SX? I am hearing that they came with 200c or TH350. My car has a 231 in it, which trans do I have? What is a quick way to find out if I have to see for myself? I won't be pulling engine for a few weeks.

Are you referring to rebuilding trans or 231? I don't plan on rebuilding the trans if its a 200c. I haven't been able to determine if its a 200c or 350. Whatever trans it is, it only has 64k on it. I hope its a 350 so I put in the 330 engine I have in it and ride out. I've haven't heard of nobody running a 200c/330 combo. If so sure the combo didn't last long.

If you are referring to rebuilding the 231, I won't be rebuilding that either.

I have an olds 350 to rebuild and 200r4 trans but that will take some time.

 

I have been following this and the engine thread you started and wanted to offer some advice. I hope you take this the right way. You are a young guy and what our hobby needs is new, young blood to keep it going and growing.

You are contemplating some major changes, modifications and rebuild and you don't have a lot of experience. Okay, neither did I or anyone else on this site until we learned, usually by our mistakes.

The first thing you should do is buy the factory service manuals for your car. If you plan on major components from another car (or year) you should have those manuals too. The generic manuals help, but the factory manuals are much, much better. Read them, re-read them until you understand. The manuals for my cars are dog eared and beat up from constant use, but are worth every penny they cost.

You are on a limited budget, so mistakes are usually very expensive and can eat up you budget in a heartbeat. Most experienced guys will tell you to make ONE change at a time, not a total redesign of the drivetrain. That takes a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience and usually a lot of money.

Good luck with your project, but take small steps as you learn and gain experience.

 

Thanks brown7373 for the advice. My car isn't operatable right now. That's the reason for attempting to redesign the drivetrain asap. A seized 231 in such a beautiful car makes you get the ball rolling on getting it started. You are right my budget isn't high. However, I am under budget on car.

I have made many mistakes before with g-body cars and a beloved 86 442 that I miss dearly. That's why I am devoted to getting this Omega operatable and piece by piece "striving" for nice quality. I know more mistakes are in the horizon.

I will be looking to purchase a manual for the Omega. Hopefully ebay has one.
