I just got this car a few weeks ago and Im having trouble trying to find the right sending unit for it (73 omega). I’ve called a few places like autozone, advanced auto parts, Napa, but of course they have no idea. I’ve been looking everywhere but can’t find one. I’d like to tackle this issue asap, as my car died the other day driving (fuel related, I’m not sure if it’s something to do with the sending unit).

 

It would help to know which sending unit you are talking about. If it's the fuel tank sending unit, one from a Chevy Nova may work.

I think the Ventura, Apollo, and Nova are the same.

 

I always found it interesting that NOVA was actually an acronym for it and its sister vehicles:

Nova
Omega
Ventura
Apollo

 

okay cool, I did some research and I think the delta 88 sending unit is the same so I ordered that from oreilys and I’m going to drop my tank and see for my self when it comes in tomorrow morning 🤙

 

Yeah it’s pretty cool, especially how most of the parts are interchangeable, more so body wise but it definitely makes the part finding easier haha

 

At least it would "seem" to appear that way. The term is Nova, it isn't NOVA. There wasn't a preconceived idea by anyone at GM (that I'm aware of) to create the NOVA acronym. It was merely a trim level for the Chevy II when Chevy 1st introduced the term Nova. So, while the term NOVA was never intended to be an acronym, it gained an apparent popular following among some. They simply picked Nova (not NOVA) as the follow-up label to the Chevy II upper level trim model Nova and dropped the Chevy II badging.

 

WTF, Norm. I was merely pointing out that the word NOVA was also the first letter of the four vehicles based on the same platform.

 

what would you recommend then? I’ve seen a lot of Camaro sending units, should I look into that or should I just get a universal sending unit if this delta 88 one doesn’t work

 

Or just send it to Bob's Speedometer. Howell, Michigan. They do a lot of services, including rebuilding yours.

I hope you're right, and there's nothing to lose by trying, assuming you can return the unit if it doesn't fit.

But note that the fuel tanks in the Omega and Delta 88 are completely different in shape. This may impact whether or not the D-88 unit will even fit in the Omega tank.

The fuel tank for the '73 Nova is identical to that of the '73 Omega, so if the D-88 unit doesn't work out, you might try to find a unit for a Nova. Nova is more likely to be supported in the aftermarket.

I did a little more looking around. At the Rockauto website, they show the exact same fuel tank for the 1976 Nova as they do for the '73. But Rockauto DOES show availability of fuel tank sending units for the '76. I would think that, if the two tanks are identical (same part number), a sending unit that fits one tank would fit the other tank, since they're the SAME TANK!

I have no idea where you did this research, but they are NOT the same. Per the Olds factory parts book, your Omega sending unit is P/N 6429283 for V8 cars and 6429284 for six cylinder cars (I assume one is fuel return and one is not). Delta 88 sending units are 6429288 for non-A/C and 6429289 with A/C (again with and without fuel return).

P/N 6429283 is also used on Novas and Camaros for the same years. I suspect they pretty much grow on trees.

 

As I did recently a complete Omega rebuild I can confirm you will be fine with a 1973/74 Chevy Nova sending unit
