Demolition Derby!

I'm volunteering to be on a friend's pit crew for this season's demolition derby. It's a Buick, but I figure you guys may enjoy seeing the work in progress as we work on it. It's a 66 or 67 Buick Electra 225 4 door, with a transplanted Buick 425ci Wildcat 445 in it. It's a real monster, should take quite a beating to kill it! Worked on it the past couple weeks, just got the engine to run today and tested the transmission real quick. It's going to be a lot of fun, and I might learn a thing or two.

One thing I can say, is we'll pipe the exhaust straight up through the hood, giving it somewhat the look of a pipe organ. We might just name the car "Maestro", and paint a slogan on it that says "We're just here to play." Puns are fun, right?

I'll take pictures soon and update this thread till derby season starts, to keep everyone posted on the project.

Sorry, but it pains me to see any 60s car destroyed like that - even a four door.

if it's a "445" Buick,, it's a nailhead 401. What year is the engine? That's not one to burn up,, for real...
PM me if it's a 401/445.

I thought it was a 401 at first, but the driver told me whoever he got the car from said it was a 425. Either way, it says Wildcat 445 on the air cleaner.

I would be very curious to see the block and head numbers! The reson for my curiousity is I have a 66 Buick Skylark GS, it originally had a 401/445 4 speed in it, currently has a 430 Buick, with 4 speed. I have entertained returning it to the original engine/trans combo if I find one close to my build date.

The value of a 4 door Buick Electra 225 with a completely thrashed interior and all kinds of broken crap under the hood is pretty nill. I wouldn't cry too hard over it.

Smash it, bro!!
Make it #225, and paint it cool, not all 1/4 assed with a runny rattle can number 5 minutes beforehand.
People in the stands like to root for the coolest car.
Do the rule books say you can make your own radiator? If you are allowed, definitely do it.
I'm on the local DDDA site sometimes. Go to Wecrash.com I can sit there for hours trading parts, and checking out everyone's rig ins.

the driver's dad is painting the car for us. $100 prize for best in show, and his dad's paint jobs have won before. Our driver is #150. the rules are very very specific and restrictive, but our driver has run many derbies before so he knows the right people to call to find out what we can and can't do.

Keith, I understand your point about bustin' up old cars, but there's just too many to save, and not enough car guys to save them.

Just have a
look.

http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb...st=0&sk=t&sd=a

No one will save these non-smashed ones, because it will cost $15 grand, but people are willing to pay off a $40,000 death trap so long as it drives while they pay.

As far as emissions go, I'd like to know how much pollution has been made by manufacturing giant ugly plastic bumpers, and POINTLESS rear spoilers, side, and hood scoops for the last 20 years. Not to mention the smell when they are all melted down for scrap over and over.

There are plenty of old cars still Keith, and we'll be lucky to see 10% of these ever restored.

That is cool! Definitely post pics of before and after the demolition derby season. It would be neat to do that. It is a bummer that a 60s car is getting thrashed but at least it is being used as opposed to sitting in a field.

If you guys don't notch the frame and pack the rear panels, I'll give that thing 1 race before it's toast. Maybe even 1/2 a race. Your car will turn into a plow in 1 hit if that frame bends the wrong way.
Jack the front end way up with some Ford truck springs, and pack the rear by smashing it into the olds 98 in that field a few times. See how your notches are turning out. Also, chain the rear frame arches together so they don't bow out and lock up your rear wheels.

Keep us posted on the rules out by you. I bet Idaho is pretty light on hitting you with the book. Sounds like a blast. I demo'd my 84 delta in 2001...threw a rod through the pan & snapped an axle. What a marshmallow 307&7.5'' rear is a garbage Heat setup.

we're going to notch the frame in the back to give it some leeway and so the rear quarters don't dig into the wheels, they'll bend the way we want them to. we're also putting a set of Super Swampers on it, in case things get muddy he'll have some extra traction.

Our driver has won a few derbies before, once with a Lincoln Mark VIII, haha. he's also a body man, so he knows what's up.

Hellz yeah.
I'd put the trunk lid inside the trunk, and bend the quarters in over it. Smashy smashy!!!

I don't know if it was planned, but when I watched it (twice) the feed goes into slow motion with a weird kind of slow-mo sound track that could be from Friday the 13th or something right as the car hits the loader, then it speeds back up when the driver climbs out. Sort of neat. Normal ambient noise sounds weird in slow-mo.

well unfortunetly my time has been consumed by my job, I haven't gotten to do hardly any work on the car and the derby is today...i couldn't get the day off to pit crew even, therefor I have no pictures!

Silver lining to every cloud: the carb for the buick engine was shot, so i loaned my Carter AFB to use, and discovered my carburator needed rebuilt, so the driver paid to have it rebuilt and my friend's dad (who is an oldsmobile genius) rebuilt it, so that makes me happy.

I like the kind of people that like demolition derby's but...

I hate destroying valuable cars and parts that keep great cars from being finished. They should use reinforced cars from the '80's & '90's if they can't figure out anything better to do.
