Trumpet exhaust tips
I've seen the trumpet exhaust tips on 69 442's installed over and also in the tailpipes, just curious what was correct and if there is a preference. I actually have 2" tips but 2 1/2" exhaust that came with this car, so I'd like to salvage the tips with a piece of pipe that would go over the tip and in the tailpipe.

The factory trumpets go over the stock 2" tailpipes. Any you've seen inside the pipes were were someone tried to adapt the stock tip to a larger aftermarket tail pipe. Today you can get the 2.5" tips from Pypes. I just use those.

Check Summit Racing - they sell "adapter" sections of exhaust pipe for coupling mismatched sizes. I've purchased those from them before and they may list one that fits over the 2 - 1/2 tailpipe and slides into the chrome trumpet. I've also found misc. adapters at a local auto parts store like O'Reilly's.
Don't know if you have any old muffler shops around but they may be able to "tweak" any adapters you find a bit further with their pipe expanding machines.

The problem with adapters is the restriction. Why spend all the money for a 2.5" pipe and then choke it down at the tip? Keep in mind that an adapter that necks down to fit INSIDE an OEM tip will have a 2" OD and a 1 7/8" ID. You'd be better off simply sliding the OEM tip into the 2.5" pipe and tack welding it there. At least then the restriction is only 2" diameter (the ID of the tip).
