Depends on the model. Some are from outside some from inside.

If it's a chrome mirror it tightens from outside with an allen key and if it's a sport mirror remove screw on housing and tighten base screws and replace housing...

If its the chrome mirror make sure you turn counter clockwise to tighten from the outside with a hex key.

Maybe I'm wrong but the screw screws in from the inside (under the mirror) Where the hex key goes is actually the end of the screw. So you want to actually pull up on the screw from the out side, which would be counter clockwise. But I could be wrong. This is just how I remember doing it.

The chrome mirrors from 1972 would require turning the allen screw the wrong way to tighten the base against the door. Since it's actually tightening from inside the door. CalBear, do you have the chrome or body colored sport mirror on your car? Did you get the answer you need from this thread? John

Sorry, we got sidetracked on the chrome mirrors. For the sport mirrors you do have to pull the door panel and reach in from inside the door to tighten. Post again if you have any more problems with it. The 1970-72 sport mirrors will all fasten inside the door. John
