Headers

I like everything I read about Dougs headers for my 71 350, cept it seems they dont do the 350. I wanna remove the cheap rust tubes I have and replace with a coated quality part. Recomendations...Thanks

Hello :

Before we start, I want to confirm that this car is not a Cutlass Supreme. If you have CS, this hedder will hang too low. We make another hedder for CS's, part number 58190.

So, if you have a standard Cutlass, it’s a straightforward install. The only hard part is you have to unbolt the passenger side motor mount, and raise the engine to get the old exhaust manifold off. You just remove the manifold, then lower the engine and install the hedder.

Thank you,
David

This is Hedmans reply to my header fitment question. I'm going with plan that they are wrong..

Is there anything about the Cutlass Supreme that makes it different from the Cutlass when it comes to fitting headers? I have a 70 Supreme and a bunch of header companies such as hooker say they only make headers for the 70 Cutlass and that the headers won't fit the Cutlass Supreme...sure sounds like BS to me...

smcurro, I've researched, asked and read alot on the header subject. The only people who say they wont interchange are the manufacturers. What do they know? Experienced folk say they work.

This topic has been covered repeatedly (nearly as often as the motor mount topic) on all the Olds boards. I have personally measured the engine location in a Supreme. There is no offset. The motor mounts and frame mounts are the same as on a Cutlass. The frame is the same. There is no logical reason for this disclaimer. Many folks have installed regular Cutlass headers with no problems (other than the usual header installation problems). You nearly always must move the brake distribution block. Starter clearance will be tight. The backdrive linkage to the trans may or may not fit, depending on the header brand. None of this is unique to the Supremes.

That sounds very logical...Thanks Joe! Also sorry to ask a well documented question, I didn't think to search for it before I asked...

Headman shorties have been on for a week. Good fit, oil filter, clutch linkage and starter all wide open now.
