Fuel Filters

How many of you guys have in-line fuel filters before the carb? Are your's before or after the pump? How often do you guys change them?

I seem to go through fuel filters a lot, like I actually notice a difference in snap/response from the car. The last filter was put on in october, and granted they aren't expensive, but i've only driven 200 miles, why/how is it already clogged?

The last few changes, I've actually fed the line into a jug and cranked the motor for 5 seconds, measure the volume.

They seem to start now flowing as much in like 3 months!? Is this maybe lending itself to another problem? My fuel pressure stays constant at 5.15 psi throughout the whole rpm range.

Just brainstorming here.

I run an edelbrock inline fuel filter without any issues, been on the car for a few years now, although I may have put a max of 3k miles on the car.
Now, just last summer I had nothing to do on my car so I decided to put a new gas tank on, ran new lines and installed a clear view filter before the new carter fuel pump. Also added a moroso fuel pressure gauge after the pump.
I'm thinking about removing the filter before the pump now because the pressure gauge seems to bounce between 4-5.5 psi so I think the filter before the pump is not helping anything and just creating a problem.
Hope this helps
Eric

IT does. I mean, there's gotta be a reason my filters are either clogging so fast, or with a small restriction my pump is freaking out. But everytime I measure it, it doesn't fluctuate. I'm going to cut the clear bowl out of the old one and see what that black spot it.

But it's like I put in a new fuel filter everytime and bam, performance back.

No reason I should go through one more than 1x a year, and even then, I think that's excessive.

I'd say you're due to drop your tank and check your rubber lines. Black flecks sounds like you've got degraded rubber lines in need of changing. Sand in the filter is usually from the bottom of the tank.

I run a Fram canister fuel filter after the electric pump on my Cutlass. I dont drive as much but they usually dont clog as much as yours. I think you should drop you tank down and see what's inside of the tank. Make sure you have a screen sock on your sending unit.

The inline fuel filter on my car has been there for years. I may have changed it twice in the past 10 years.

I/ve replaced my fuel pickup sock and all of my rubber lines, have blown through the lines with compressed air, and have a recent pump on my car, as well as a fuel filter in the carburetor, so I don't run an extra fuel filter. Just something else to go wrong.

I run a Wix, Purolator, or Fram inline fuel filter and change it once a year. They cost less than $6.

My car STILL is not on the road yet. New fuel sock. I have thought of a in-line filter between mech pump and carb, as I find the GM carb filter a pain, but I have only had trouble when I let it set a long time. The filter gets a white coating that I believe comes from ethanol. In other applications I never used a filter between tank and pump, even electric pumps
It does seem you have a tank or rubber problem. See what is in it. Check your pickup sock.

I did have problems with the filter before my stock pump too. After it seemed to go away, it just clogs up a lot. Or seems to.

It's not so much a fleck as it is a stain, almost looks like ink, or mold.

But otherwise, it looks like it's pretty unanimous I'll be dropped the tank soon. GREAT. I can't even pretend to be excited about that. I'm sure the Might As Wells will take over and I'll be replacing everything..... super.

I was really hoping someone was going to say it looks like the diagram in the fuel pump, or I dunno, something.

I'll just make sure the filters are clean in the interim. $3/$4 is cheap compared to what the tank is going to fetch.

I just looked through receipts, the tank was put in in 2006. That's only 10 years, and I dunno, maybe 15k miles. :/

I should have said I have an inline filter and no in-carb filter, so I have only one filter and not two.

I started using the inline filter back in the '80s for the larger filter area, to be able to see what's in the filter (clear plastic), and also to prevent potentially messing up the threads in the carb snout.

Kenneth, a lot of us after stripping the threads for the first time started doing the same thing back in the 70's.

That's one thing in a GM that did not impress me. (the carb filter arrangement)

I make a point of using stubby wrenches for this. Most people that strip it are using giant wrenches or adjustables.

The black spot/stain isn't something to be worried about?

And maybe it's not related to fuel filter clogging, maybe the filters expand due to heat or something. But it seems every couple months I get weird bogs/hesitations, and when I measure flow in the filter, it's substantially less.

New filter seems to clear up the problems.

They are cheap and easy to replace, and even though I with the E-brock has on in the inlet nozzle it, it seems excessive.

I also think it's vapor locking, because I do frequently see the filter 1/2 and 1/2 air&empty space.
