I am looking for a correct firewall grommet for a 1968 Cutlass. All of the repop ones I see from the typical Olds vendors all have the three holes (see attached photos), however, only one of the holes has the slit/channel for a wire to slide into. According to the photo in the Assembly Manual in Section 1-2, page 112, it shows the correct part is #392199 (see attached photo), and the photo shows that each of the three holes has a slit/channel from the outside of the grommet for the wires to slide into each individual hole. Does anyone know if the part shown in the Assembly Manual actually had the 3 slits when it came from the factory? And if so, do you know where to purchase one of these?
Hi Jeff,
The one in my '68 (original and has a coating of some sort of sealant over parts of it) appears to be like the one in the assembly manual. I replaced the one in my '69 with the repro type as the original was falling apart.
Thanks Randy for the input. So far I haven't found any vendor that sells the correct grommet. I may have to go the same route you went and go with the repop. And yes, it shows in the Assembly Manual that there was a #9981041 sealer that went over the grommet and wiring. I'm assuming that was to make it so water wouldn't seep past it.
Proly got used gromet in servicable cond. & because shop rats brought that stuff home in pockets round here slim possibility of nos 1 but proly not
