Chrome shops

I need some parts rechromed for the console of my 65 Cutlass. In the JWO magazine there are two chrome shops one being in Chicago and the other in Texas(Houston). I live in MO. Any comments on these two places or others near me. Thanks!

All chrome shops have gotten incredibly expensive due to the EPA requirements. You get what you pay for. Top quality work on a bumper that needs some straightening as well as chrome will run $750 or so. I just had the bumpers and some pot metal trim done for my 64 Vista. $2500, of which about $1500 was the two bumpers.

^ this, I have been there and have seen their work, it truly is top notch, even they will tell you "we are show quality." They mentioned a place in Iowa to me that does pretty good work that they trust. I hope to redo my bumpers one day but college tuitions comes first.

I'm looking to have my bumpers done this winter. Called Finishing Touch they said $1800. Never had anything rechromed, will they also straighten out slightly bent bumpers? Or do they just take what they get an dip it?

Good chrome shops will properly straighten bumpers before plating. Any binding quote will require a look at the bumper to understand how bad it is to start with.

As Joe said any Good Chrome shop will do that. Most will give you an estimate over the phone and want the bumper to give you a binding quote. Ogden Chrome has done that several times for me and I have always given them one that has no rust and has only minor dings. I also email them good pictures in advance.

North Star now part of Keystone Minneapolis/ST Paul...or Pauls in PA. Experience with both. NS did my 68 442s. Paul's just did C3 bumpers for a 68 vette. Triple show chrome...wow is all I can say.
Both have great customer svc. Shop around quick before its all shipped to you know where...love the EPA!
Note a bumper depending on application can generally not be re-plated more than 2x max.

Everybody now sells repro bumpers for the 1968-72 cars. They are all Chinesium and probably all come from the same factory in China. Shop for the best price. The early ones a few years ago had some quality issues (ie, visible grinding marks under the chrome), but the ones I've seen in the last few years look pretty good. These are noticeably thinner metal than stock, so you get what you pay for. Good enough for a driver, but I wouldn't put one on a showcar.

I ended up taking the three console parts to Jackson Plating and Chrome, on Jackson street in Kansas city. After what happened with the place in Leavenworth going out of business and NOT telling me what was going on I decided that I wasn't going to put my parts in the hands of FEDEX or UPS. I have a feeling those console parts are rare and IF I had to replace them then I might find parts that were in worse shape (pitting) to get re-chromed. I have learned that re-chroming pot metal is a real pain. So Jackson did the three pieces for $400 and some of the pitting couldn't be taken care of but it is so minor it doesn't bother me. The two pieces the other shop did are perfect since they had little or no pitting anyway. SO all is good and I have them back in my hands!!!! Also the owner took me through the shop. He does some luggage rack parts for Harley-Davidson and I saw parts from from a Ford parts supplier of restoration parts. He took the time to school me on the process and it was an education.
