A6 Compressor Clutch Bearing Removal

I am replacing the bearing. Have removed the front section of the clutch and the pulley. The CSM says to remove the bearing retaining ring. This ring has no snap ring fittings, it has a round cross section, and it is in very tight. How do I get it out? I attached a picture of mine.

A second question. There is an oil soaked piece of felt (?) inside the front head. One end of mine is a bit chewed up. What can I replace it with? I don't even see this in the CSM exploded view of the compressor.

Never mind. I was able to pry it out with a small pair of needle nose pliers with a very sharp point. Used a magnifier and got the point under the end of the wire - which is cut at an angle so you can slip a point under it.

I pressed out the old bearing and pressed in the new bearing using a wood vise - the kind in a woodworking shop. It worked well. Seemed better than pounding on it with a hammer - which is what some of the youtube videos show.

Would still like to hear from anyone that has replaced the felt piece. I assume it is there to absorb any oil that seeps past the seal.

You are correct, the felt is there to absorb any oil that seeps past the seal. It is typically held in with a small metal retainer that presses into the end of the snout. The felt and retainer come as part of the compressor seal kit. The felt does not normally need to be removed for a hub bearing replacement. Did it come out when pulling the hub?

I am getting some oil leakage, so I pulled out the felt to investigate. The felt is oily. The inside edge is hard and somewhat distorted - I assume from friction. Wondering if I should replace the seal.
Mine doesn't appear to have a metal retainer.

You have received good answers for your questions. The felt and the metal retainer should come with the seal kit. You can substitute any felt with similar dimensions, but substituting for that little retainer might be difficult. If the compressor was "throwing" a lot of oil it probably would be good to replace the seal while you have it apart. There are a few special tools needed. Put refrigerant oil on the new seal & O rings.
When you push in the new pulley bearing try to push on the outer race. Do not strike the bearing.

I was wrong. I do have a metal retainer. Finally looked at the compressor shaft and seal cross section in the CSM.
