Does anybody have ideas on how this is even physically possible to work correctly
When the hinge is all the way up, there's no way that that little lever will be pushed all the way up to make the light light
It should be mounted higher as I recall. Additionally, I believe it's currently mounted upside down. The lever is removable (from what I recall). So, turn it upside down then place the lever in the same relative position where it will grab the trunk hinge.
EDIT: It "might" be mounted in the correct position but turn it upside down, remove the lever and re-insert the lever in same relative position.
it looks mounted the same as yours except yours does look higher. The bracket is installed in the factory holes. Maybe the convertibles are a little different.

I think you figured it out. Yes, mine is mounted for a convertible. I went to Inline and reviewed an image.
NOTE: Looks like you only use the mounting bracket for a convertible. See "View A" versus "View B"
Note the very first image in the series of images I posted. Note there is no mounting bracket on that installation. That is not a convertible. My car is the yellow car. My car (convertible) uses the mounting bracket.
I should note my (yellow) car is a 1971 convertible. Was there that much of a difference between the hinges I wonder? And, are there (maybe) differences in the trunk lamp between 1970 & 1971? The little crazy stuff, eh?
