67 Olds 98 telescoping steering column question

I got a 67 Olds 98 and am putting back together the telescoping steering column and can't get it to hold position. I have and gone thru Fisher body manual and Chassis manual and can't figure out how to get it to hold a position once you get it where you want it. What am I missing ? Thanks

Not a clue but I have a '69 'vette with a tilt-tele and when it came time for a rebuild I found a place local to me that did a superb job pretty fast. Small business, nice folks.I think they have people from all over the country sending them stuff, I just drove over there. No, I am not related to them

Not particularly tooting my own horn, but what’s here may help you. The information here is from 1966 model year but other than cosmetics, I believe the Saginaw tilt & tele column didn’t change much year-to-year. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...primer-174709/

Have a close look at the section with the spring loaded shoes. The shoes should be well greased to permit the tilt-spring release to work properly. It’s not a trivial thing to fix. Think very carefully before removing the shoes by popping the retention pins. The shoes are very tough to get back in. Very tough.

If you get into a problem, the guy to get to for a proper fix is George in Florida. He has a specialty business restoring and repairing these columns. See his videos on YouTube under (I think) Eldorado George.

The good news is these columns were very well built and with just a little attention can last well past 60 years. The only exception is if the plastic break. Then you’re up a creek.

Cheers
Chris
