I'm trying to get the 65 Cutlass fired up. It sat 24 years. I've got a new fuel pump on, so I'm now getting gas to the carb. However, it fills up the float bowl and shoots out the top.
I undid the twelve screws on the carb, but the top wouldn't come off. I have a feeling I'm missing something in the middle.
The needle and seat are not closing, I presume, but is there a trick to getting that lid off?

That's a rochester 4 gc.There are 13 screws holding the air horn on 1 is next to the vents lh side,also the air cleaner stud needs to be remove.You will find 2 floats needle and seats.

The air cleaner stud does NOT have to be removed to remove the air horn.

I got the lid off. Thanks for the info. I was missing the 13th screw inside the hole on the driver's side. I removed the air cleaner stud. Looks like it threads way down into the base. The top would probably lift up a couple inches without removing the stud, but my stud has a ring on it to keep the air cleaner lid from pulling down too far. The ring is larger than the hole in the horn. I suppose if you had a different stud in there, it might not be a problem.

Looks like the carb is not too nasty inside. Needles are sticking up a bit when I lower the floats. If I tap the horn, the needles drop back down. When the needles are up, no air goes through the gas path. It seals up nicely. Not sure why the thing wasn't shutting off the gas, unless the floats have become gas-logged. They're rubbery looking things.

I'll try once more next week, and if it still shoots fuel out, I'll throw on my Carter AFB 3721S just to see if the motor is salvageable. If it is, I'll look into fixing or replacing the carb with another identical. Lordco says they don't carry them any more.....bummer.
If the engine is toast, I'll put the stock carb back on and think about selling the car.
