tried starting it again today, a couple of times it stumbled and seemed like it might try and run but other than that i am just getting a little bit of firing. bowl is getting gas tried it with choke open and closed tried pouring gas down the carb and tried different pugs. ignition appears to be in working order.

I thought about that, not sure how to check? Wouldnt it have done something weird or made some bad noises? i was on the freeway when it quit running and it just quit no noises or sputtering or anything just quit as if i had shut it off.

I really don't know - I changed mine and put in a hot cam as soon as I got the car (many years ago), to avoid such questions.

There should be instructions in the manual, though.

the belt seems tight and is said to not have many miles on it. I can check my book and see what it says about the belt and cam timing.

You mentioned a few posts ago that the points gap had opened right up, seemingly for no reason. You need to find and rectify the cause of this or you will never get the carburettor set up properly.

yeah i guess i do. I was having problems with it closing but i found it had a flat washer instead of a lock washer, after i changed it i havent had a problem with points until monday. the plate that they mount to seems tight and only moves with the vacuum advance. I have no idea what good open it up like it was.

Checked voltage at the coil, I'm getting twelve volts with the key on. All plugs are firing, cranked it over with plugs out but hooked up to wires

tried a coil and condenser, nothing changed. tried a different carb and nothing changed. I rechecked my cam/crank alignment and it did seem a little off so i took the belt off and lined everything up like the service manual said. we got it to run the longest it has but still wont stay running. sometimes it will spit back out of the carb and a few times there was fire. idk whats wrong but im done with it

Popping out the carb sounds like it but I reset it and tried to start a few times and check to make sure everything is still lined up and it appeared to be. It doesn't always come back out the carb, maybe once in every four tries.

Have you checked that your valves aren't bent and are closing all the way?

Compression test?

Idk what it is now, when i set the cam timing i put the distributor in at 0 and then adjusted up and down while trying to get it to run to see what it liked. my dad thinks that the ignition is working intermittently, i have no idea whats wrong.
