Need air cleaner suggestions
As you guys know I put a BBC in my 67 Cutlass! Anyone who has done the same and use an Edelbrock carb chime in with what your using! Not much room in there!!

Looks wicked all murdered out like that.
Whatever choice you go with, i'd powdercoat it black.
My .02, I think a dual ram intake would look **** on it.
Like a 1968 Hurst Olds setup, but NOT using the corrugated flex tubing.

Yeah, the 454 sits alot higher than the sbc.
I really like the black with the old school M/T valve covers! It's got an HEI on it!
Hmmmmmm, I might look into a dual snorkel air cleaner!!!!!! Thats cool

I had a Repop 69/70 Chevelle L89 open element air cleaner w/ crhome lid on my last elcamino. It had an extra 1/4" drop built into its base vs the rest of the cheapo "drop base" air cleaners i had.
It was pricy at $75... but it was an excellent reproduction (unlike the cheap chrome lids) and the base had that extra drop.
You might look into em. They should be available at all the repop places now.
It would probably allow you to run a 2" element at least.
No idea if it will with on the ebrock carb though. They were designed for factory holleys, and thats all i've ever run.
Other options are to run one of those K&N Extreem style top filter, where teh air filter lid has the additional fins to let more air in.

I was looking those extreme lids, I just can't seem to take a shine to that! But the xtra airflo did cross my mind!!
I wasn't thinking when I went with the edelbrock, I had a double pumper holley on there with mechanical secondaries originally!! OMG it was a fuel funnel, plenty of power tho!!!
Let me tell you Tony, I fought with those transmission hard lines for hours trying to squeeze and route em between the headers and block! Then I got the idea of running them up and over the wheel well, out of the way, so they are nice and cool!
I'm really liking the dual snorkel, I wonder if that would bolt up to a Edelbrock??? Aces, do you have access to a carb to see if it would fit???

Both the standard Edelbrock air cleaner and the OEM oldsmobile air cleaner fit well atop of my 1405. I'm guessing since the dual scoop was for the Z/28's as well, it should bolt right up if it's the same circular pattern?
you "might" have to buy that L-fuel line adapter in lieu of the straight one that edelbrock sells. I bought one just in case.

The only other concern would be the HEI Clearance with the snorkel type??

The Xtreme lids cost you power, on Holleys at least. I had a car with a small K&N with an Xtreme top on my chassis dyno last year - over a 20rwhp loss due to the filter.
The bigger the drop in the base, the more you lose as well. You are better off with a smaller filter (as long as it isn't TOO small) and small drop, than a taller filter with a big drop.
Here is a dyno chart of some testing I performed last year. The only variable was the base of the airfilter housing - the same element and top was used on all 3.

I have to get a banjo fitting either way!! Not much room for the temporary rubber line!

Here's a picture of my Old-school setup,
Please ignore the paint on the air cleaner. It was high temperature 60% gloss and i'm not happy with it. Going to change it to Krylon satin black soon. WAY better finish.
I digress, as you can see, i have a 1'' riser, stock air cleaner, HEI, and 4bbl 1405.
It clears my hood barely, But it clears it.
For argument sake, this is what my engine bay USED To look like. 3 years ago when i bought it from some nit-wit.

Lee - thats an informative chart!!! I've currently got a 1" drop and a 2" filter. I managed to find an old edelbrock lid that just barely fits under there, it gives me about 1 3/8 clearance between the underside of the top and the carb. The pic's show a flat top that barely left 3/4" clearance! Engine definately no-likey! I have not run the current setup as my radiator drain plug is fubar'd and I can't get it repaired until tonight.
Oooooh Tony, that is a marked improvement!! The Olds motors are not near as tall as the 454!! It looks good under there now!! Was your car Fuscia before?
Aces - thats quite the accomplishment with the no carbs agenda!! My hats off to ya!! So what happened to all your old carb stuff?? HINT, HINT???

Thanks! It's taken alot of time and patience but slowly i'm getting there.
Originally the car was Bamboo (colour i have it painted now) But the guy painted primer/grey/black and the engine bay was purple... I dont know what the heck the guy was thinking...
I actually just painted the inside/fenderwells satin black last week.
