1970 Ninety Eight 4 door Steering Box

Hello Everyone. I am a new member but I have been checkingthe site out for a while. My power steering supply line rotted out so I ordereda new set from Fusick. When I went to install them, the supply was short byabout 8". I went to my local auto parts store and they were able to orderme one and when I got that one it was the same length as the one from Fusik. Itook one of the new ones and had a local hose shop cut the ends off and put alonger hose on. Problem fixed, not so much. Since then I tore the motor out fora rebuild project and while doing some other projects in the engine compartmentI noticed the steering box is not lined up and bolted in (4 bolts) like itshows in the repair manual. So my thoughts are the steering box was replaced atsome point with an improper replacement. Has anyone faced this problem? I amgoing to try to take the box off this weekend and locate a part #. Any insightyou guys can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys, I’ll be posting alot more. Ill grab a few pictures of the steering box as well and post.

That is odd that the part you got from Fusick was incorrect. Definitely try to find some casting marks on that gear box and let us know what you find out.

FWIW, Oldsguy put a manual steering gear box from a 70s Pontiac Ventura into his 69 Delta 88. We cut the pitman arms in half with a hacksaw and had them welded back together (Olds centerlink end welded to the Pontiac steering gear box end). It worked great for Armstrong steering. I would check your Pitman arm too to see if it has been modified like I menitoned.

So I was able to pull the gear box off today and now I am plagued with another problem. I have a cracked frame behind the steering box. I will weld the crack, grind, and clean it up. Ok so back to the gear box, here is the casting #7809512. Can anyone trace this to a 98?

Unfortunately, I don't have a way to decode that number. Does it look like this one?

I know pictures in parts catalogs are usually lousy, but it might help. Hopefully someone else has a way to double check that part number.
