Yeah when I first started on this website I remember a thread where someone had mentioned the fact that he was your dad.I assume that he was mostly responsible for your own love of Oldsmobiles? I am not sure where I went wrong but my dad was a Ford man and usually had F-150's. Even my mom has always driven Ford's from Pinto's to Lincoln's.I am 51 and have never owned a Ford , I guess that makes me a black sheep.I have almost always owned GM's from a 66 Impala SS to a 72 Grand Prix 454 , 79 Buick Park Avenue ( 87 Mustang forgot about that I gave it to my girlfriend) to a 90 Astro all wheel drive which is still working and finally a 2007 Colorado. When my dad passed away he left me his 29 Model A leatherback which I managed to trade for my 69-98 convertible. Always wanted a 455 rocket and now I finally got it last year. Now if only I could get the last couple of things done. The rad turned out to be crap even though it was ok last summer after I pulled it out I found it to be full of sludge. I cleaned it all out but now it leaks like a sieve so it needs to be recored. Plus the washer/wiper motor is not working and I have to have a mechanical fitness certificate done before I can put it on the road this year and the wipers have to work.It is getting power to the motor in the black relay but not into the motor itself so I don't know if it's the relay or motor? For now she remains docked

 

Yeah, my dad got me hooked on Oldsmobiles early on. Good luck getting your Olds roadworthy.

Obviously you instilled in him your love of Olds as he was growing up. As you can see my dad never managed to get me into Ford's except for that 1 Mustang I thought would be cool to have but lost interest. Always wanted a 442 since I was young but never had the opportunity to but one. one other thing that I have always wanted was a convertible and my 69-98 is the first and it has the bonus 455. Now if I could only figure out how that wiper/washer pump motor works I might get it working.

 

It doesn't get any better than this. A 1962 Ninety Eight (California) with 54000 original miles. Original paint, heck, it's ALL original and looks like the day it rolled out of the showroom.

Owner would not drive it on any day where there was a cloud in the sky. Still has the plastic seat covers to protect the cloth. Couldn't help it, in spite of the fact that my wife was with me, I fell in love again. Tried to get some shots to share with you, keep in mind I'm not a photographer, and I only have an inexpensve camera.

First let me say that is one impressive 98. Can't believe it still has plastic covering seats , he must clean that to keep in good condition. You don't see a car like that everyday. You should have had someone take a picture of you in the level 5 HAZMAT suit when you were sitting in the car!

Gotta say that I would have loved to sit in that car. But it's a respect thing. The owner really enjoys showing it off and suggesting some good photo angles, even little details. He asks everyone to respect the car by not touching it. So out of respect for him and the car, I just tried my best to record a sight I'd never seen before. Level 5 hazmat suit??? Whatsathat? I'm guessing something to protect you from the plastic on the seats?

On the bright side, if all goes well he'll be back with the same car next year. Maybe I'll have a better camera, or can shoot a movie that I can post.

Does anyone happen to know what the spec is for length on a 1966 98 LS???? What I can find says 18.7 feet. My garage is 19.4 feet at its shortest spot so I want to make sure this thing will actually fit when I get it home. i keep forgetting to take the measuring tape with me when I go work on the car.

 

My 69 olds is 224" long and 80" wide

Not sure if it's the longest but I know that mine < 69-98 convertible > also has a continental kit added which the previous owner put on so it makes it even longer. I like it with the kit on the back but it's a pain filling the tank.

 

I believe the longest Oldsdmobile was the 1973 or 1974 Custom Cruiser. They were only slightly shorter than the Buick station wagons which hold the record for the longest GM ever produced.

 

I was looking at the chassis service manual to see what my Vista Cruiser measures exactly, only a measly 218.3 inches.
Mine's really short.

I looked at the other '71's and the 98 is 226.1 inches but in the enyclopedia here it's 232.2 inches? so I had to dig deeper.

The Olds 98 wiki says the 74-76 '98's were the biggest and heaviest Oldsmobiles ever made and that the added length over the previous years was because of the 5mph bumpers that were mandated in '74.
Maybe that's the length discrepancy and it somehow got transposed back to all of the 98's in some reference materials?

The longest regular wagons according to http://stationwagon.com were the 1975-76 Buick Estate wagons and they were 231.8 inches, the 71-76 Custom Cruisers were 231.2 inches.
Not much but it's still shorter than the gargantuan 232.2 inch 98, a surprise to me and I hope they're all wrong.
I was really hoping a wagon would be king.

 

Thanks for the info! I read about the Buick wagons at that station wagon website. I was just a few years off. I am surprised that the 98s were longer than the Custom Cruisers. I know my 98 is pretty darn big, but all of the Oldsmobile land yachts are.

Thanks for the link. That station wagon is AWSOME! Even though it isn't an Olds. I've seen a 1976 Olds Custom Cruiser on-line. Doesn't Jeff Alman own one? I think he is one of our members.

Unfortunately, I don't think that guy will get much over $10k for that station wagon. It is pristine; however, station wagons, sedans, and 4 door hard tops never fetch as much as the coupes and convertibles. People are just crazy!

 

I was very surprised that my wagon fit in my 232" garage. Barely.

 

I was also surprised when my 71 98 fit in my garage. I have enough room to stand in front of the Olds when it is in the garage. Conceivably, I could change an alternator or water pump with the car in the garage and the door down. I also have enough room to squeeze between the rear bumper and the garage door. The only problem is I have my spare 455 in front of the Olds. It takes up quite a bit of room.

my 03 town car rides on a shorter wheelbase but overall length is longer by about 1" than a 1965 Eighty-Eight... Kids call my ride a Land Yacht..

 

I'm just glad I have a 24' garage to put mine in , with the added continental kit it adds a few more inches to the lenght.
