Citcapp you nailed it on the head!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah everything I said before. Forget it..... Somebody upstairs doesn't like me. The car was idling in the driveway getting ready to go for my VERY FIRST cruise and the engine decides it wants to start making a VERY unfriendly metalic snapping noise right out of the carb. So much for that idea!!! Sounds kinda like a dropped valve.

If you dropped a valve it was better in your drive-way then out on the QEW at 120...

Yeah agreed. I'm hoping its just a broken valve spring and I got lucky.

Maybe you have a bent rod or a bad lifter, or both.
While replacing my valve seals, I noticed that I had a bent rod and two of the rods had some play. So then I took off the intake and found two bad lifters. I was going to only replace the pair of lifters that were bad, gave my head a shake and decided to replace all the lifters, since the engine was open.
All this work is happening after I had painted the engine. I guess I must like doing things backwards.

Jaybird,

Smart move replacing all the lifters just saves opening the engine again

66nintheightis,

Hope its something simple and cheap to fix. Good luck, damn that murphys law anyway

I will be pulling the valve covers & possibly the intake off tomorrow to investigate. I shut it down as soon as I heard the noise so hopefully there is no damage

Jaybird when doing your valve seals what tool did you use for a valve spring compressor?? Also where did you buy new lifters & pushrods???

Craig: My mechanic had a valve spring compressor. He showed me how to use it and he showed me how to put air to the cylinder. He also instructed me in making sure that the piston was top dead center before removing the valve spring.
I borrowed two push rods from my other complete 425. The hydraulic lifters, along with the gaskets came from Car Quest.

So with sore back and all today I said screw it & pulled the valve covers off. I am certainly glad I did because I found a broken rocker arm on the passanger side.

Anyone have any recommendations on good replacement rocker arms??? I figure I might as well repalce the whole set. If one went odds are more a close to going as well.

Your back probably feels better, bending over your fender to get a good look at your engine. While you are at it, you might as well replace the valve seals and take out every push rod and check them. Try to determine if there is any play with the push rods, to see if there is additional damage. Since you are so close to your hydraulic lifters, you might just want to remove your intake manifold and check them. I know... It sucks to be you. Better now than when it's all back together!
Am I missing anything?
Oh yeah... Despite this setback, I hope that you and your wife had a great anniversary!!!

That is the plan. I have a new intake to go on the car anyway so while I am here I might as well get it all done in one shot.

So far I have priced out stock style replacments and they are $3-4 each.

Everything seems to be fine with the valve & spring. I will be pulling the intake to replace it so I will inspect the lifters at that time.

Here are some pics of what I found.

Here is the exhaust rocker from the same cylinder.

Here are some close ups. I am pretty sure it was failure due to age. You can see quite a bit of cracking around where the bolt goes through. It looks like the main break actually started at one of these cracks.
