On my 1968 Olds 98 convertible, the instrument panel bulb for the auto transmission shifter position needs to be replaced. Do I have to remove the instrument panel to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Most bulbs on that vintage can be reached from behind, provided there isn't something in the way. I think you may have more luck lowering the steering column than removing the dash, as the gear indicator is above the column and below the speedo. Typically, there is a piece of trim below the column, that comes off. Then, you have 4 or so bolts holding the column up, but, be careful, there is a little cable that pulls the gear indicator that is bolted onto a track on the rotating part of the column. Be sure to disconnect that first, and be sure to mark where it goes and put it back in the same spot when done.

Then lower column so wheel sits on front seat. You should then be able to reach back side of gear indicator.

I do not own this year car, so I don't know precisely, but this theory should work. If you read the 68 chassis service and fisher body manual, you can see these things before tearing into it.

 

Hi, welcome and great car! The bulb is on the right side of the indicator (passenger side). It’s not easy but you can get it out from underneath. It helps to let the column down (remove lover bezel and the mounting bolts under the dash. You might find the housing to be melted or distorted somewhat... causing the socket to not stay locked into the plastic PRNDL housing. Both of my 68s have this issue. I tried to give you an idea of location in the photos. I’m doing this on my iPhone so it’s not great but hopefully it helps you! Dave
