1965-1970 SSBC Full Size Disc Brake Conversion

So I was putzing around on the Summit Racing website today and noticed they listed a front disc conversion for my car and they are SSBC kits no less. Previous to this I have only ever seen the Scarebird kits.

I was skeptical that maybe the Summit Racing site got it wrong so went to the SSBC website and sure enough here they are!

oh man thats nice i might just have to do that, i hate the way the car pulls when hitting the brakes

A little late to the game, I know, but I've had the SSBC front disc conversion on my '67 Delmont 88 for about 8 years now. It was a lot less back when I bought it (from Summit). I've been very happy with the results.

More affordable setup?

That is something I'd really like to do but $900 seems like a lot of jack for basically rotors, calipers, master cylinder and hardware. Is there a later model olds or buick disc setup that bolts up?

SSBC Front Braker Conversion

I recently bought the SSBC A129-13 conversion kit for '65-70 Olds 98. Literature says it fits 88/98. This kit requires you to separate your factory hub from the brake drums. Then you re-install your original hub on the spindle and the supplied rotors fit over the hub. The problem I am having is the diameter of my factory hub is bigger than the machined out part on the rotor such that the rotor will not fit/slide onto the hub. I called SSBC this morning and they said "we will research this issue, but you may have to have your hubs machined smaller or you may have to machine our rotors larger on the inside, we will get back to you". Either solution seems unacceptable to me. Anyone encounter this problem? Thanks for any input.

So they've never addressed that, huh? They're not being honest if they say they've never heard of that issue. My friend called SSBC when he encountered the same thing way back in the early 2000's installing the same kit in my Delmont. He turned the hubs on a lathe in his shop but discussed it fully with SSBC's tech line. It worked fine and wasn't a big deal since he had the equipment available, but when you're buying a dedicated kit modifications like this shouldn't be necessary and certainly shouldn't be a surprise to buyer!

I called SSBC again, and you are right. They said I have to have the hubs cut down to make the diameter smaller so they fit inside the rotor. I don't need much, 1/4" may do it. We are slim on machine shops where I live but will see if it can be cut on a brake lathe. Thanks for your response.

I guess I am getting one of those lessons with this vehicle that seems to occur all to frequently.

I installed the SSBC "big Olds" front disc. Cut the original hubs down so the rotors would slip over the hub. I thought I was going to be able to use the original 14 inch rims. I realize those rims were on drums before so that may explain why they do not clear the calipers.

Any specific wheel I am looking for? I hate to lose the factory hubcaps. I have a 14 inch rim off of a 69 Camaro that had disc brakes but it won't fit either. Tried a 15 inch rim off of a 84 silverado but it won't work either.

Do I have to have an Oldsmobile 1"rim that came off a disc car?

SSBC suggested I stack washers on the studs to see if I can get rim off of caliper and if I can, then that will determine what size wheel spacer I need. I will for sure have to find longer studs as the ones supplied by SSBC are not long enough now before I stack washers. Anyone buy into this solution? Thanks.

Don't use spacers. That kit is not intended for any 14" wheels. Later-year GM big car 15" wheels will work. I also responded to your PM.

By the way, I already have disc brakes (15 inch wheel) on my 68, not drums in the front. Will these just fit or the same modification is required? Maybe they fixed it by now if applicable.
