Newbie Intro

Hello, great time to join at the 50th Olds 442 anniversary and looking forward to communicating. I am looking for 64 Cutlass F85/442 pillarless Coupe to import to UK. I would appreciate any help in finding me my 50 year old dream ride.

50th anniversary of what? Oldsmobile's 50th anniversary was in 1947.

Ah, but he doesn't mention the 442 or that he's looking for one.

What you're trying to describe is a 1964 Cutlass Hardtop Coupe (aka Holiday coupe in Olds speak) with the 442 option. Far as I know though the 442 was not offered as a Holiday coupe in 64.

From 64-67 the 442 was an option that could be ordered on specified models of the Cutlass/f85. IIRC the 442 was a late entry to the 64 game after the Pontiac GTO, so not many were produced as 442s - only 2999 and some of these were 4 door sedans since the 442 started out as the B09 Police package back then I believe. The first year that I'm aware the 442 became it's own model is 1968 although some argue that it was 1965.

The earliest published reference I can find for the 442 performance package is the Dealers SPECS from 1965 and it specifies 'available on V8 club coupe only' - model 3427 in the f85 lineup. Also available in all Cutlass models - 3827, 3837 and 3867.

Some of the 64-67 guys can chime in and update if I've posted anything wrong.

Dan - 2 of the cars you show are pillared sedans - aka club coupes. The last one is the HT model aka the Holiday Coupe.

Actually, it was:

See the note at the very bottom of the page:

Thanks Joe, that's why I said that any of you guys with tons of 64+ experience would chime in and correct any errors. I couldn't find option B09 in the 1964 SPECS. That product selling guide - is that the one that dealers had in the showroom?

I notice that the car is badged as both Cutlass and 442. Nice photo-shopped red line tires

Found another one, this one must be a later ad since the 'note' is built right into the copy. The 4 door f85 442!

Keep in mind that the 442 wasn't available until about 3/4 of the way through the 1964 model year. The SPECS guide that you are probably looking at shows "Revised February 1964" on the last page, which is why the 442 option isn't included. Note that the Vista Cruiser IS included, however the VC isn't mentioned in the 1964 CSM at all. The Vista was released in Feb 1964, thus this revised edition of SPECS.

Actually, that's the information provided to the sales reps at the dealerships to educate them about the new product.

Yeah, if Photoshop had existed in 1964...

Check the position of the red lines over top of the white 'blur' indicating speed, and the position of the red lines on the rear wheels - they go slightly onto the front stainless reveal. This is photoshop after the fact, not the original ad I'm sure.

Did you get that from the Old Cars Manual Brochures Project?

Yes, the red is original to the document. The original was hand drawn and the red (which is used throughout the copy) was printed in a second pass after the black. The version on the Old Cars Manual Brochures site is a scan of a paper original. Mismatch in positioning of the colors is a function of registration problems during printing. This was not uncommon for low-end printed documents. The color Sunday comics have this problem all the time.

Yes a '64 442 will be very hard to find and I suppose not cheap either, since less than 3000 were made.
Should be able to find a very nice clean '64 Cutlass, for they are around.
Anyway good luck

Thanks Gene, nice signature - I am sure there is one out there somewhere. Please let me know if you see any for sale.
Thanks Hitesh
