VIN number

Hey. Now it gets a bit tricky. I am a Dane living in Sweden. I bought a 75 Cutless with VIN Jk5TK5M248991 It is sold here in sweden, new in 75. Now comes what is a bit tricky. I went in on http://www.v8cars.hu/oldsvin/vin.php and when i write my VIN number, I get the following message:
Please note:
A VIN never contains the letters 'I', 'O' and 'Q'.
1946-48 VINs are 7 or 8, 1949-60 VINs are 8 or 9, 1961-1963 are 9, 1964 VINs are 10, 1965-80 VINs are 13, and VINs 1981 to present are 17 characters in length.
The vehicle year must be 1946 to 1997.

What am I doing wrong? : Pleace be nice to help a new member and an old guy

Welcome. By the way, it's a Cutlass, not a Cutless.

What you're doing wrong is misreading the VIN. Here's the official GM VIN card for your year that decodes the VIN:

http://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vi.../vincard75.pdf

From the VIN card, we get:

J = GM Division. This is always a digit, unless there's something unique about European cars. Verify that this really is a "J", as it should be a "3" for Oldsmobile division.

K = Model - Cutlass Salon Colonnade

5T = Body Type. Again, these should be two digits. I suspect that it's really "57", which would be a 2 dr hardtop

K = Engine - 350 4bbl with 170 net HP

5 = Model year - 1975

M = Assembly Plant - Lansing, MI

248991 = sequential build number

First of all, that's not an Oldsmobile VIN.

Oldsmobile VINs start with "3" in 1975.

So,
  • First digit: J≠3
  • Second digit: K = Cutlass Salon
  • Third and fourth Digits: Indicate body style. There is no 5T, but 57 would = Hardtop Coupe
  • Fifth digit: K = 350, 4bbl carburetor
  • Sixth digit: 5 = 1975 model year
  • Seventh digit: M = Lansing assembly plant

Look at your VIN again and see what the numbers really are.

A "normal" US built 1975 Oldsmobile's VIN starts with a "3" & is 13 characters long.

3J57K5M248991 would be a "normal" VIN for a '75 Cutlass Supreme 2 dr. w/350 4bbl.

If the VIN posted is accurate:
WAG - this is a "Knock Down" vehicle that was shipped to SWEDEN for final assembly.

JK5TK5M248991 (is the 4th digit a "7"?)

J = Cutlass Supreme
K = "knock down" ???
57 = 2 dr. coupe
K = 350 4bbl single exhaust
5 = 1975
M = Lansing, MI assembly plant
248991 = VIN sequence number (148991st assigned VIN)

You were right ;-)
