new dude with tranny swap questions

Hello olds lovers!!

I have had a few cutlasses over the years, I currently have a 75 supreme. I'm building a 350 for it that should yield bout 375 horse. I'm ditching the 2.56 gears for some 4.11's. So the next thing that's going is the 350 turbo for a 200 r4. So here is the question.... what needs to be done to my column shifter to accommodate the new 4 speed auto? There of course isn't enough detents in my original column for the extra gear. This car is near mint original so adding a floor shifter Is not an option. I've got everything else that I will encounter figured except this column delema. Any guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

with my '71 anyway the column itself doesn't have any detents in it, just smooth motion all the way from stop to stop once it's disconnected. Connecting the factory linkage to the 2004r was just a matter of making sure that the linkage allowed for enough travel to reach all the way from park down to first and it's perfectly functional. You'll have to just get used to counting the clicks because the indicator will not point exactly to the gear you're in. The "detent clicks" you feel are the selector inside the transmission clicking through.

You don't need to do anything... you just won't have first ... and how often does someone do that anyhow?

thanks for the responses to this post!! It would be great if my column didn't have any detents. unfortunately tho, I have my motor and trans on the garage floor and I still have detents in the column. I may have to just hook up the auto overdrive trans and live without first gear but it sure is nice to pull that shifter down into first, when your smoldering the hides, to keep that tranny from shifting thru the gears. I guess what im saying is that if at all possible, I would like to be able to access all the gears available in the 200 4r with my factory 75 column shifter. so if any one has any more ideas on how to accomplish this it would be greatly appreciated! pics of my 75 supreme coming soon!

I believe the only detents you have are for park-neutral?

there are detents for park, reverse and neutral share a detent, then there are detents for drive, 2nd and 1st.
