still need help

In my previous message about the winshield wiper/washer I was told I needed the part no. 49284 , the entire cruise control. (etc) unit. today I found a part from "motormite" , a Dorman company, with p/n 49265, which is just the "washer lever" for the setup.
However, the instructions for installing that part say to
1. "pull entire unit from the steering column, leaving the wire attached.
2. break off damaged washer lever
3. install new washer lever.( it is slotted on the side )
4. snap entire unit into steering column.
All this leads one to assume one can pull that entire cruise control, etc: unit out without removing the steering wheel or anything else.
I kind of have to wonder about this situation. ( hard to believe ?)
Can anyone enlighten me on this before I break something ??

I mentioned this in my response to your other post. You must remove the steering wheel, lock plate, and loosen the turn signal switch. This requires both a steering wheel puller and a lock plate compressor tool. You need to look under the column and find the connector on the turn/cruise turn signal switch. Tie a string to it. Move the turn signal switch out of the way (you don't need to disconnect the harness but you do need to remove the screws). The lever should pull out of the switch. You also need to unscrew the hazard flasher button. Now pull the turn/cruise wire out of the column, feeding the string up behind it. Replace the broken part, then use the string to pull the wire back down the column. Reverse the process to reassemble.

Joe: Thanks again for your reply. I wrote all the instructions for this "repair item" verbatim because I'm a little confused as to the "repair " instructions saying to just "pull the entire unit out of the steering column, which indicates to me that this is possible, and the last sentence which says "snap entire unit into steering column ". does this make sense to you ?? I know what the service manual says about pulling the steering wheel and all, but the book says "nothing" about the "cruise control stalk" . the indications are that it is not necessary to pull the "wire " (cable ) out just to replace the "washer lever" !! It has what appears to be a slot for the cable , rather than going thru the end of the entire unit.
If you would care to comment one more time I'd appreciate it.
Have a good day my friend.

turn signal lever

i dont know if this helps but on 80s 88s and 98s you CAN pull the lever out of the switch which is in the column,it has a spring clip type latch. the tricky part is pulling it out without yanking on the wire for the cruise. i wish i could picture how the washer lever can be slotted for the wire, dorman makes a lot of good lifesaver products .i would think the cutlasses would have the same type set up.jc

wipers

I found the answer to the removal of the "cruise control stalk " on my 84 cutlass . what wasn't mentioned in the instructions was that the wipers "must" be in the off position. then the unit comes out easily, and in my case there was enough slack in the wire cable to get it out a couple inches , which was far enough to allow me to replace the "washer lever".
However, now another problem. all functions work Except the wipers won't turn off. I need the wiring diagram for this car .
what is the url for the website where I can find it, anyone know ??
thanks
