Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada. I've been a closet Classic Olds forumer since August when I purchased my second Olds, a 71 442. I've owned my first, a 71 SX hardtop since 1987 and restored it over the years adding factory options etc. It's been so many years that parts need to be re-restored. Luckily today it is much easier to restore an Olds than back in the late 80's and early 90's. At that time you could still obtain some NOS items from dealers but were out of luck for many other items. Up here in the rust belt parts cars were few and virtually non-existent any more. Now there are catalogues filled with parts, where only money holds you back!

My 442 in Saturn Gold with a white top and white bench seat is a rather plain car as was typical of Nova Scotians when ordering a car. I'm planning on a body off frame restoration and as of now the front clip and engine are out. I've started restoring all the small items with the help of my 13 year old son who convinced me to purchase the car. The biggest challenge will be replacing the metal around the back window due to the dreaded vinyl top rot.

I do have one question for all the experts concerning the underneath floor colour. Every car I've seen restored always has black floors. My Arlington, TX. built SX has a semigloss primer colour floor colour. I started cleaning the undercoat off the Lansing built 442 and it also has the reddish brown semigloss paint. Is this paint available anywhere? Has anyone else found this to be the case? There are alot of originality buffs out there which I have seen at the Nationals but only black floors. Any ideas? The black is easier to do and better looking maybe?

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a great project. Do you plan on complete originality in your resto or are you going to modify some things?

 

I like restoring the cars back to the way they came out of the factory, but I do like adding factory options that were available for the year. My son is following in his father's footsteps and we agreed to add sport mirrors, sport wheel, Super stock 111s and Am-Fm radio. We toyed with going with buckets and console but a bench seat 442 is unusual. Besides, I have buckets and dual gate in the SX.

I loaded up the SX with the following:
Power windows, Power door locks, power seat, power trunk, Am-Fm, 8-track, rallye pak, tilt wheel, sport wheel, SS111s, bumper guards, hood lock and dual gate.

This 442 project is going to take some time, but it will be special, as a father/son project.
