Hello,
Havent actually found a car yet. Back in high school my dad owned a 1972 cutlass, and i fell in love with it looking at pictures in our albums. When I was a kid my mom had a 1980 cutlass too and I have good meomories with that car. So anyway Ive always wanted a cutlass or 442 just like my dads, and thanks to a drop in my insurance premiums and a better paying job i can finnally afford one.
Does anyone have any advice where to start looking? Ive been looking at craigslist and ebay so far. Im looking to spend between 8 and 12K. I dont want an excellent condition car, but something that runs and I can just fix parts as things go wrong. Looking forward to talking with you all!
Neil

Hi Neil, welcome to the site! Where are you located? Here's a couple possibilities for under $4,000 in Southern Oregon.

If I didn't have too many projects already I'd seriously consider either of these cars! John

The one for 3,700. The 70 Cutlass is a scam and needs to be flagged. That car has listed on just about every city. He wants people to send money with out seeing the car and he doesn't answer any questions about the car. We have talked about this car before a couple of months ago.
Im located in Omaha, Nebraska. Big block would be best but I have no problem with a 350. My real only preference is a manual transmission. Obviously they make them, but they seem to be hard to locate so far... Also apparantly power dropped significantly after 1970 in these engines, would everyone here recommened a car 1970 or earlier because of this?
4 speeds are fun, no doubt about it
The vintage depends on what you have in mind. If you want an all original car then yes 1970 or prior would give more hp. But if your going to rebuild an engine you can make whatever you want. You can even convert an automatic transmission car to a 4 speed if you don't mind changing things.
My opinion, for what it's worth... either go for a collectable 442 as original as possible with the options you want. Or get a Cutlass to make into what you want and just have fun with it! The 1968 F85 post car on the local Craigslist would be fun. I've known this car for about 7 years and missed buying it once, still kicking myself over that! It has a 6 cylinder with 3 speed manual on the tree. It would be easy to swap in a V8 and muncie 4 speed or one of the newer 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions. This car already has the floor pedals, bellhousing and I think the z-bar is the same. To put in a floor shift wouldn't be difficult. I think his price is high right now, but if someone was serious and offered cash I think they could have a sweet project car. I haven't called on it because I know if I look at it I'll want it!!!
Keep looking on Craigslist, ebay and Oldsmobile sites like this. But as you said V8 4speed cars are not common. You may want to consider a nice builder and make the car you want. John
