I inherited my grandparent's 1976 Olds 98. Its been sitting in a neighbor's garage, on jack stands, and started every year or so for the last 15-20 years. Today, I checked the oil, transmission fluid and coolant all of which was full. Aired the tires up, took it off the jack stands, brought over a spare battery and it started right up and drove it to my house not far away. It was purchased new by my grandfather in 1976. My grandmother called it "Black Beauty". I have fond memories going to church in it on Sundays, which was pretty much the only time it was driven. I plan to clean it up and enjoy it for a little while before I sell it. Check her out.
Beautiful car! Is it really just 8,000 miles on the odometer?
Your car is a four-door hardtop (no pillar between the front and rear door windows), and 1976 was the last year that Olds or any GM make offered that body style.
There were two versions of the 98 in 1976, the 98 LS and the higher-end 98 Regency. Each was available as a two-door or four-door hardtop. By far the most popular was the Regency four-door hardtop with 55,339 produced. Next was the Regency two-door at 26,282, fewer than half of the four-door. 98 LS four-door production was 16,802, while for the 98 LS two-door, it was only 6,056.
The base price of the Regency four-door, which was the most expensive version, was $6,691. For the LS four-door, it was $6,419.
The LS came standard with cloth seats or "doeskin" vinyl in white. Standard in the Regency was velour, with doeskin vinyl or black leather as options. From what we can see of your car's interior, it looks to be black and probably leather, so I'm guessing yours is the Regency.
Yes, the odometer is correct. I installed new bumper fillers the other day, and it was a little tricky but not too awful. In the process, I scuffed the paint just a little bit which is kind of a bummer but it's not too bad after a few drops of black touch-up paint.
Welcome, very nice. I had a 76 Regency coupe back in the day. Metallic blue with a 455. Loved that boat. Came across an old Polaroid of it the other day.
Get yours back roadworthy and enjoy it.
