Old mechanic new to Oldsmoblie!

Hello, my name is Brad and I have added project car to my stable. A 1972 442 Convertible automatic red white stripe lower third of body both sides. The previous owner removed motor rebuilt by local reputable machine shop. So my learning of Oldsmobile begins, being rather proficient with Pontiac, Chevrolet, Jaguar which I retired from dealers service department 2019. I need to research my VIN to see if motor is in fact original. Second after inventory the boxes of parts, there will be other endeavors. Oh, my stable is small 1989 Chevrolet C10 Cheyenne 4.3L 5spd manual with original Tommy gate, 1995 Pontiac Firehawk #135 5.7L 6spd ,1997 Jaguar Xk8 Convertible 4.0L 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2WD 4.0L + my oldest 1972 OLDS 442. Thanks BRAD

Post up the vin, we can decode it, and a picture of the body tag will tell interior and exterior colors

Welcome! Please post some pics. IMO, the '72 Olds A-bodies were the last of "The Greatest Generation".

FYI, your engine block will have a stamping near CYL #1 under the head that is a derivative of the VIN#. If they match, thats the original block. Same w/ the trans.

Welcome
I purchased a 72 re-pop Chassis Service Manual actually came in two books before finding an original copy with the color electrical schematics. They are both decent in my opinion.
Take a look on e-bay or keep your eyes open at swap meets etc.
I also picked up a 72 Fisher Body Service Manual. Good info to have on hand when discussing methods with the group.
Lots of good folks here. Like said post up some pictures when you get a chance.

Keith

This is your data plate decoded.
I used https://datatagdecoder.com/?q=tagpick

Engine code
32M230912
3=oldsmobile
2=1972
M = Lansing
230912 = should match the last 6 of your VIN. If it does then this is the engine that came with the car.

Thank-you for the decode, I will check VIN tomorrow.
First bonus, found out the correct water pump is 65-67 Cutlass!
Auto zone could not get in the Zone. Three pumps number four the charm.

Yep original number engine, fresh from machine shop. I can see thru spark plug hole .040 on top of piston. Was 350ci don't know what cubic inch it is now. Read 370 is max for a 350 ?

Im sorry, im not following you…
You found out the correct water pump is 65-67?
Correct for……?

And as you’re new to Olds, be mindful that while just about every water pump will fit, there are 3 different heights that will mess with your pulleys.
Do a dry fit when you get it!

1972 350 cutlass w/o air, matched original pump height all other pumps to tall. Sending three pumps back to Auto zone. I watched the video, great torque twist impressive. I know this is not the place for technical queries. List of the Rallye 350 and other cars stitched to your post, I can not find the path to add to my posts.
