I'm new to working on cars and really do not know a whole lot yet.
I recently bought a 1976 Cutlass Supreme from my uncle. He parked it 20+ years ago because of a bad transmission. I cleaned it up over the weekend. My father in-law and I drained the gas, put a new battery into in and using starter fluid it started up but doesnt seem to be getting gas.
Welcome to the site, car cleaned up nice. Disconnect the rubber lines from the tank to metal main fuel line and the metal line to the pump. Blow out the main metal line with compressed air. Change rubber fuel lines from the tank to the main fuel line and from the main fuel line to the fuel pump. A new fuel pump may also be needed.
Welcome to the group... Your Cutlass definitely cleaned up real nice... The simplest thing to start with would be to disconnect the outlet fuel line from the fuel pump and check the fuel flow while cranking the engine... Good fuel flow/pressure would possibly put the problem at the carburetor if it actually is a fuel issue...
Go through everything.
The whole fuel, brake, cooling, systems...all fluids... Diff, trans, pwr steering brake etc. Look at all soft lines under the hood.
Clean as many grounds as you can find. Look at the battery cables and wires on the starter. Check Ign system. Pull the HEI module and "regrease" it. Carry a spare HEI module(and heat paste, get a good one not chineasium junk). Good engine grounds will keep the module happy. Look at the centrifugal advance weights.
Grease the hell out of the front end(without popping the dust shields). Repack the front wheel bearings. Grease U Joints.
Those look like new tires??? If not do that too. Anymore then 10-12 years old replace em.
Oh and check the rear bumper mounts. They are notorious for rotting off unless you live in Phoenix.
The carb and ignition curves on this car are very lean. This car is one of Lansing's earlier attempts at lean-burn with the shitty cat converter(pellet). Might want to lose that for a free-flowing dual exhaust and richen it up a bit...but get it running safely before you dive into super tuning.
That is a sharp ride! It cleaned up really well. Hopefully you can get the drive train sussed out and get 'er burning rubber! My mother had the '77 version of your car, but hers was white/red. With a V6 (I wish I still had it, though.)
very nice, good luck I always just ran a gas line from a red gas can straight to the fuel pump whenever firing something that has been sitting that long once it been established it fires and will run then I go through replacing fuel lines and etc. good luck, love the car!
