Coolant temp sensor removal

Hello all, new "again" to the forum here. I have a 1967 Delta 88 425 cui that has sat in my garage for 6 or so years. I have recently got it running again and I am doing some work to get it road worthy again. I have a cooling system related questions. I would like to install a mechanical water temp gauge into the intake. Could I just remove the coolant temp sensor (located at front left of intake manifold) and install the gauge in there? I guess what i am asking is does this sensor just control the dash "hot" indicator light? Or is there another function of it and removing it would cause problems with the cooling system? Thank You

You sure can.

Just a dummy light won't conflict with anything else.

Thanks for the reply, that was the answer I was looking for! I have another cooling system question. A few years back I removed the heater core. I blocked off the heater core valve at the back of the intake with a rubber cap and hose clamp and did the same at the port on the water pump. Is this bad to do, will it effect coolant flow? If so, could I run a hose between the two ports?

The factory simply capped those ports on cars that had heater delete. There is no problem doing that.

I don't know about other cooling system problems, but when I removed the temp sensor on my '67 Delta 425 to hook up a gauge, it caused a leak in the divariable veeblevurtzer. Fortunately, I had a spare!
