I'm not necessarily new to the forum but did something stupid and have a question about it. I was using a floor jack to jack up the front of my car using the cross member. I clearly didn't have it centered and it slipped off the jack and the oil pan came down on the jack. No puncture but a decent dent in the pan near the very front closest to the balancer. Besides the obvious ugly dent should I be concerned? I started the engine and it seemed fine.

Trust me, lesson learned about the halfa@@ jack placement.

I guess I should add it's a 455

 

I offroad with my Jeep and dented oil pans are commonplace when rock crawling. That area is the reservoir and is not close to the crank throws. If you didn't hear any banging, then you're OK.

 

As long as your oil pressure is ok and no noise or leaking your good.

If it's a really big dent, though, you may need to consider it when reading your dipstick.

When I bought my 71 98 it had a sizeable dent in the oil pan. I don't know how it happened, but it never caused a problem. When I rebuilt the engine I replaced the oil pan with a Milodon one.

 

If you put yourself under it try to use jack stands, timber blocks or something so we don't lose another member prematurely.

 

As previously stated, should be okay provided there is no noise or very evident signs of leaking oil... The only concern may be potential for the front pan seal to leak over time...

 

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm okay then. I'll look for leaks over time. No noises heard. Yeah, just freaked out for a second.


And heck yes on the jack stands. I was actually jacking it up to put it on stands.
