siezed 350
siezed 350
hi there i have a 73 olds 350 that siezed on me while driving, i am running it in a stock car and i had just finished my qualifing laps, they are short 1/3 mile each and I ran two. anyway I was leaving the track and my 350 just quit when it got down to near an idle,i did not here any noise ar any thing out of the ordinary. i cant budge the crank with a breaker bar. any ideas would be helpful before tear it out
it was a good strong motor and i would like to keep running it if i can save it and show up all the chevys

Under the circumstances it sounds like you broke a bolt on a bearing cap. Remove the oil pan and see if you have a bearing cap hanging loose.
If it is a hanging cap then the force of the cap impacting on the block will usually bend the crank. It may be time for a replacement engine.
Try turning the engine backwards just a little. Yes, I know this is a bad thing to do, but if this is a hanging cap then the engine will turn freely backwards for a bit. If it turns backwards and then turns forward and stops again then there is almost no doubt that it is a broken cap or connecting rod.

thank you for the welcome and replies, I will pull it out and tear it down, i did try turning the crank both ways but it wont move, if it got too hot would an olds engine sieze up like that? if i do need to replace it what would be the best model of car to try to find with a decent HP out of the engine.
Thanks Rayce
Thanks Rayce
I had a 283 turn a bearing , one crank bearing slid under the other and she siezed tight. i was driving down the road when it did it and she just stopped , no sputter or anything just silence. had to turn the crank and add new bearings. i assume you did not run it out of oil or water , and it would have to be hot for longer than it was to seize the motor.
Thanks wolfman, i will post what I find out when i get it out and apart, all the fluids were 100% and new,the only bonehead thing i found was it still had a thermostat in it that i should have removed before racing, i will kick my self for a while if that's what caused it
