restoring my '71 convertible
Greetings. I'm new to this, so please be gentle. A few weeks ago I bought a '71 cutlass supreme convertible. I am the 2nd owner and it even has the original window sticker and protect-o-plate. Everything is original (even the spare tire), not much rust either. She does have some other issues though.
The one that I am battling right now is that she does not like a cold start. If the engine has not been ran for a day or two, it will just crank and crank. No slow down, it's not the battery or starter, just cranking like she is not getting any fuel. Usually at this point I spray some ether into the carb and she starts right up. Once the engine is running and warm, I have no problem restarting it for the rest of the day. It is only after she has been sitting. I changed the spark plugs and coil (no joy).
Looking for some options. Any help would be appreciated and I hate keeping a can of spray start in the trunk. It's kind of embarrassing.
One last thing...anyone have a line on a grille for a '71 cutlass supreme? All I seem to find are 442 grilles.

Welcome to CO. Sound like a great find. First rule on Co is you have to post pics. Ha ha. Is your choke closing when the engine is cold? A lot of older cars like to have the accelerator pumped a couple times on cold starts. Could be the float level in the carb but start with the simple stuff first. Before you attempt to start it cold take the air cleaner off. Crack the throttle and see if the choke butterfly closes. If it does close look down in the throat of the carb and work he throttle. You should see and hear the gas squirt into the carb. If no gas squirt there is a good chance the carb will ned to be rebuilt. I'm sure there will be other replies for other checks. These guys are a big help and very knowledgeable.
