Also note on the dealer brochure that the 305 is shown as "available after Oct 1, 1976". Apparently the VIN card was printed before that.

Hey Joe wouldn't have these brochures be printed long before the cars were even built?,so could there have been a snafu regarding what engine was actually available for the production line ?GM may have changed their mind at the last minute maybe?

Maybe yes, maybe no. Unfortunately, we don't know which was printed when. The dealer brochure clearly says that the 305 wasn't available at the start of production. The VIN card doesn't have a printing date on it. Ultimately, the O.P.'s VIN will be the deciding factor. This printing date issue is a continuing problem since obviously documents printed early in the model year won't cover mid-year changes.

Yes, I understand that the 305 2bbl is not shown as being used by Olds on the VIN card, but that conflicts with the brochure.

Interesting.

So we have reasonably good sources that show that the only 2bbl V8 was the SBC 305, and that they were still painting them orange at the beginning of that model year, so we have a pretty good idea that if that car is all-original as the PO claimed, it has a 305 in it.

The final question would be: Is the 5th digit of the VIN a U?

Joe / Eric,

Thanks for the additional information on the motor. I have been out of town, but I just checked the VIN and the fifth character in the VIN is U, so that is consistent with the brochure, and it sounds like it is most likely a 305. The car is still in Jacksoneville, and I am not, so once I trailer it down to Stuart, I will check the code on the head of the motor. Once again, thanks.

joe_padavano, I am going to pull the lock cylinder and send you key codes when I get up to Jacksonville. From other threads it looks like the cylinder needs to be in the run position to be removed. Once the steerig wheel & lock plate are removed, how do you get the lock cylinder into the run position if you don't have any keys?

That's a common misconception, especially since it's what the manual says, but it's not true.

The column lock cylinder will come out in any position once you get the wheel, the lock plate, and the cover off, move the signal light switch out of the way, and depress the release tab.

What Eric said. Once you remove the steering wheel, lock plate, and turn signal switch, depress the tab and the lock cylinder comes out.
