Olds rule

I'm a new member I own a1971 w30 matching numbers 4sp car. It is currently blue with white stripes and guts. I have owned this car for the last 16 years. It is built to go no power brakes or steering. I wouldn't have one any other way.

Welcome aboard!
71 W30's are hot. Same as ^^^^ please post pics. Sounds like a great car. The lack of PB is consistent with a 70 - 72 W30's with the performance cam. Didn't allow enough vacuum for PB.

I will get some pics up she is stock. When I got her she had a big carb and intake set up on it. Ran it for a summer like that then put the original equipment that came with the car back on. The carb is correct but the breather is year one reproduction the correct olds intake was with the car as well.

Really? You mean KA heads? Those were produced for 73-76 455's. All 71 442 W30's got the H heads. Sorry to hear that yours aren't still on there. PO prolly kept them and sold them - they're worth a small fortune. Intake should be aluminum - Does it have OLDS 455 or OLDSMOBILE 455 cast onto it? 71's only have OLDS 455

my intake is the correct one. you can tell my car was torn down once and put back together some one thought they should put a bunch of go fast parts on there. I still have to find the correct bell housing as mine is a racing scatter shield type.

Now you've got my curiosity going. Do you mind sharing the name of the book?

First of all, the FAQ is full of a lot of errors, so don't believe everything you read there. Second, the factory regularly superceded parts when original parts were no longer available for replacement. The K heads are perfect examples. These are NOT the same as the H heads used on 71 W-30s. What happened is that by the mid-1970s, the only head castings available in the Olds Replacement Parts network were J and K heads. The factory parts book lists J heads as the replacement head for every low-perf application, and the K heads for every high-perf application, mainly W-30s and H/Os. Because of this, NHRA will accept K heads as a replacement for ANY factory W-30 head in pure stock classes. That doesn't mean that the K heads are the same as D, F, or H heads, just that they provide no performance advantage on an otherwise correct stock motor.

In any case, the K heads were NOT factory installed on 71 W-30s (or any W-30) and thus cannot be "numbers matching".

Well, now that Allan and Joe have sufficiently rained on your parade, I'll just say "welcome, aboard!" Don't be discouraged. I've come to realize there are a few folks out there that are a lot wiser about Oldsmobiles than I am. You're bound to learn a few things, too!

Which are not original for a '70 either - should be D's for an SX, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm afraid you are, Eric. E heads for all 1970 455s except W-30. D heads were 1968-69 W-30 and H/O.

Whoops - got it backwards - "D" is the W-30, and E is the regular '70, then F is the Hi-Po after '70 and G is the regular '71 / '72, etc.
