NooB with 61 F85
Hi guys
I came across a nice 61 F85 that I just had to have.. wife wasn't impressed about another vehicle purchase but that's ok.
This is my first Olds and I could use some help with engine and VIN decoding. I've searched this site pretty well I think but it appears there's not a ton of specific info for these available. I know about the aluminum 215, 4bbl etc, but I couldn't come up with a way to decode this engine #. HH284777 Any help would be appreciated.
I have some chevies, couple fords and now an Olds.. glad to be part of the Olds community.

there is not much info out there on what the HH284777 number means. the number to match the car was originally on the passenger side head right above that number on the block. the number on the head would have to match the protect-o-plate number for the engine. most people don't have the protect-o-plate to check the number to. still looks like a real nice car to restore. i will have my 62 on the road soon.

I appreciate you looking into that jensenracing. I will spend some time this weekend looking for the # on the head above my HH #. I read that the motor # should read something like an "ST" #...? I saw the decoding for this a couple days ago but blew through it because I expecting to see an HH # Where is the protect-o-plate? I'm not familiar with that.

there is enough difference in those engine block numbers to tell if it was originally a 2 bbl engine, 4 bbl engine or a turbo Jetfire engine. i will have to dig that info up. other than that, i don't think the block number tells much. the protect-o-plate was a metal plate that was stamped with the number from the head, transmission, VIN number and original owners information. it was located on the last page of the protection plan in the glove box. after 50 years, most of them were lost by now.
