Newbie From Midlothian, Va. 71 Cutlass Convertible

Hello everyone. I was searching for some tips on replacing the fuel pump on my 71 Cutlass and ran across the CO site. What a great resource! I am not a mechanic, just like to fix things myself and not pay someone else to do it. I bought my Cutlass in 2004 and really enjoy cruising with the top down. If I'm not doing something with the car you could probably find me brewing a batch of beer or smoking a butt on the green egg.

Welcome to the site.

Did you find the info you needed to change the fuel pump?

Welcome, nice looking car and a great choice for cruising. It can be fun and sometimes a learning experience wrenching on old cars.

Pork butt with some pickles and onions on a toasted bun is sounding pretty good.

Kenneth,
Yes, I did find some tips on changing the fuel pump. I did run into a bit of a challenge. The line to the carb was under tension and when I loosened it up it sprung about 2-3" away from the fitting. Lining it up on the new pump ate up about 4 hours of my day. Ultimately I had to loosen the pump again and connect both ends of the fuel line. Then I could tighten the pump down.

Glad to hear you got that taken care of.

I can't help but notice that the side view of your car shows it has 1972 trim and and not 1971 trim. Any information on that?

It would have been easier if you unfastened the other end of the fuel line to the carb. This way it also helps to reattach the lines on both ends.

The car also shows a brighter shade of orange that was offered on the 72’s not the 71’s. The 71’s had code 62 ( Bittersweet )

Kenneth, I never noticed that before! I guess the previous owner had 72 envy??

The paint is not original. It looks like it was a pea green color back in 71.

Never really noticed that before. The VIN is definitely a 71 so I guess the previous owner made some modifications. I bought it from Fraser Dante in Atlanta and they said that it was a 2 owner car.

Nice ride..classy! That makes 2 of us that don’t fall into the category of not being a mechanic. 🤣

Great looking car. Welcome to the Group.

I have had two CS convertibles 69 and 71.

Wish I still had one of them.
