Newbie - 68 Cutlass S Convertible

New guy to the site. I've been reading some posts here because I ran into a problem recently which was apparently the death of my original fuel pump. Put a new fuel pump on today and all appears to be good again. I might post some details in another part of the site just for future reference. I'm not a gearhead by any stretch so the info shared here by the members is certainly very useful to those of us who aren't experts.

I'm attaching a couple of photos. I've found it's tough to get good photos of a white car, especially in direct sunlight. Need to out at dusk and take some new photos.

This car has been living in my garage for 32 years and has been in my family for 46 years. It's a 350 2 bbl with 109,000 original miles and a Jetaway transmission.

Welcome to this site and you have a beautiful car! Not that I'm prejudiced or anything but I have a provincial white '68 4-4-2 convertible (black top) that originally came with white stripe tires and wire wheel covers that look just like yours. I also have a '69 convertible (same color combination as the '68 but it's a different shade of white). Needless to say, I like the '68-'69 model years and yours is a great looking car. This site, in my opinion, is the very best for Oldsmobile and questions get real answers here. It's helped me several times and I'm not motorhead by any stretch of the imagination, either. Enjoy and glad you joined up!

Welcome. That is a very nice car and what a neat history. As Randy mentioned this is the best place for Oldsmobile folks. There are lots of folks with lots of knowledge they are glad to share. And there is no such thing as a dumb question.

Welcome to CO. It's always good to see another 1968 Cutlass S convertible. Your car looks like it has been well taken care of.

Nice. 68 is my favorite year for all the GM A-cars, and especially the Cutlass line.

White cars back then had styling and trim details that made them look great. White cars now have no such styling and trim and look like a damned washing machine. About as exciting too.

Great looking Cutlass, really like the chrome strip running from front quarter to rear.

Welcome! Beautiful '68 Cutlass S 'vert, my favorite year. Do you have any plans for it other than maintaining it in running condition?

Welcome to the site! As a fellow '68 Cutlass S convertible owner, I am jealous of how beautiful yours is. I hope mine will look as good in a year or two.

I appreciate all the compliments and welcomes. I don't know if you guys will see a question if I post it here but I will try. I might move the question to another area if people have moved along from this newbie thread.

This car has always been low to the ground. I just made some measurements and the ride height is about 8.375" in the front and 8.125" in the rear (measured at the points noted in the manual). The manual says the normal height is about 9.75" so it's definitely low. As far as I know, these are the original coil springs and the tires are P215/70R14. Is it time to have the springs replaced?

The shocks are pretty old also but I think ride height is mostly a function of the coil springs.

I’m sure 50+ year old coil springs have lost some of their “spring”. New coils will make it ride a lot better.

I think these cars sat low from the factory, be careful if you replace the springs, I’ve seen people replace the original springs then see the car sitting way to high.

But they almost always seem to settle down again surprisingly quickly. As noted, these cars like to sit low.

Since you guys have been so nice and complimentary, here are a few top-down photos I took today.

This morning, I installed some AirLift bags in the rear coils to raise up the rear end. In these photos, the bags had 10 PSI in them which raised the back end 1.5 inches. I will likely drop that down some but this was just after installation to get it out and see what it looked like.
