Newb From Alabama

Hi, I'm Bradley from Huntsville, AL. I'm not new to cars, as I've been a Chevy guy my whole life, but I'm still trying to learn more about these Olds. I just got into them recently when I bought my 1st Oldsmobile last year... my '64 F-85 Cutlass. I found it behind a barn. It didn't take too much work to get it on the road, but now the engine is out for some freshening (350 Rocket BTW). Here she is, let me know what you think.

Welcome to the site. Nice find. Always fun to hear about cars found in or behind barns or other remote places. What's particularly nice about your car is the condition of the bumpers. After this many years, especially if the car has been outside much of its life, which it sounds like yours has, at least recently, bumpers on these cars are often rusted through in places, especially the rear bumper. How many miles on the car?

I notice in your last photo that you have a dual brake system. That's certainly not original, so perhaps the engine isn't, either.

Thanks for the compliments! There's hardly any rust on the car. It was supposedly garage kept until 7-8 years ago when the PO got a divorce. The engine was changed back in the 80s sometime, I don't know why. I think it's a '70 model because it has the #6 heads and doesen't look to be rebuilt. It was originally a 4-speed car, but it was converted to an auto because the guy's wife couldn't drive a straight-shift. It had a TH400 when I got it, but the driveshaft was way too long and burnt the trans up. I had a TH350 I had in the shop rebuilt and replaced the TH400. I did a disc conversion on it because I hated the drums and I already had the parts laying around.

Nice car, the red interior sets it off. For a daily driver I much prefer power disc brakes. The master cylinder you have looks like a drum one though, did you add a distribution block somewhere? Was the floorboard modified when the 4 speed was removed? Did any of the 4 speed parts come with the car?

I bought the master/booster as a combo from, I think, Classic Industries, for my '67 Chevelle. I mounted a combo valve down on the frame where the distribution block used to be. While the engine is out, I'm going to re-mount the valve and redo the lines. I haven't had the console out, but I think he just installed a plate over the hole. I don't think I have any of the 4-speed stuff, but I did get an extra engine

Great find. Looks like a good resto project , what was the extra engine you got? Plus you now have a TH400 trans sittin around.

Thanks for the welcomes! I plan on this car being a "driving restoration" as I've got too many other full-blown projects ('69 Camaro SS, '54 Chevy 3100, '92 26ft Bayliner ). I'll be cleaning up the engine bay while the motor is out, but probably all she'll get in the future is a new paint job and a new interior. I don't like having it apart for more than a couple weeks at a time. I have a tendancy to not put things back together. Oh, and I love me some grits!

I went to checking some numbers today. It appears the engine that I just pulled out is a '70 350. #6 heads, 395558 #2 block casting. My extra engine looks to be the original 330 #2 low-compression heads, 381917 #1 block casting. Makes me almost want to put the 330 back in it since all the machine work is done.
