This is my moms car. Will be mine someday. I’m in the process of taking the top end off. Mom blew the bypass hose and overheated it. So far the disassembly is going well. Hopefully the heads aren’t warped. If not, I’ll reinstall them with gaskets. If they are, I’ll tear them down and take them to the machine shop for decking. Worst case is they cracked. So hope not though. The other problem with the car is the driving experience. It wanders badly. You can over steer or under steer depending on the curve in the road or bump.

Welcome to the site, your mom has a really nice car. As for the wandering, check the steering components for play, replace the bad and take it to a reputable alignment shop. Have them set as much positive caster as they can get, .5* negative camber, and 1/16 toe in.

As long as your that deep into the engine, please look at the timing chain. The factory used a nylon coated gear. It can break up over time and cause havoc. A newer profile cam may also increase efficiency. The car is stunning!!! Rally 350's are as bold as Buick's GSX. Very glad for you. Keep us posted. By the way, is your mom the original owner?

My mom is not the original owner. She purchased it through a classic car resale place out of North Carolina. I do believe someone has been in this motor before. At least they had the intake off. As for the heads, for the struggle I went threw to get them off, they gave up and put the intake back on. It took me two days total to get the heads off. They don’t looked cracked from the naked eye, but they are warped. So off to the machine shop they go. I’ll also be removing the water pump. The heads and block are full of rust. Going to do a thorough cleaning of the water jackets, especially after I get it back together and running.

My dad had one new back in the day when him and my mom were dating. At least that’s how the story goes. I guess some lady ran a red light and T-boned it and was totaled. My dad died ten years ago and my mom wanted to get something that reminded her of him and the date car was it. She located this one that was as close to what my dad had in both trim and options. She loves this car. Just going to get it back up and running for her to continue to cruise in and make it safe. The front end is shot and in my professional opinion, it needs all new bushings and steering components. The car wanders bad and you can over steer and under steer it and if you don’t know how to react, could put you in the ditch or worse. She had two of her “muscle car specialist” friends tell her it’s fine, that’s what they do. I disagree.

Take it to a known reputable front end shop, they will be able to tell you what all needs to be replaced. However after about 50 yrs it probably needs everything replaced.

Did it still have the steel shim head gaskets installed? If your going in that deep and taking off the water pump, your just a few bolts away from the timing chain. Might as well change that also if needed.

A car can drive as you described even with all new parts and a crappy alignment. Its easy to lay underneath and check all the steering and suspension parts. These cars do not drive like the newer cars.

Does the pan need to be dropped like a small block Chevy? The head gasket was a metallic fiber style gasket. As for the suspension, I can see the upper co trim arm bushings are shot
