New returning member steering wheel question

Hello all,
I have a 72 Cutlass Supreme and I purchased a replacement steering wheel I believe from year one. It is walnut an came unfinished. Is this standard or should it be stained and varnished before usage. If so what varnish should be used for a durable finish?

Thanks

You could probably stain and clear it, but no Olds came with a wood steering wheel in this era, only a simulated (resin) walnut steering wheel was offered in '68.
